  • Oregon trip update:

We got up early (4:00 a.m.) on Wednesday at made it to Haystack Rock about 6:30 a.m. There was a foggy mist over the coast, which I love. The water was chilly but it wasn't too cold to walk around in. Haystack rock at low tide was cool - lots of starfish and anemones and crabs.

There were also lots of barnacles, and seagulls, and seaweed but they aren't as interesting as starfish, anemones, and crabs. Starfish are just cool. After a couple
hours beach-combing we went to Ecola State Park and hiked 2 miles along the cliff-side trail through lush forests. The views from the cliff-side trail were spectacular. We then drove down to Tillamook, had lunch and ice cream although we didn't go through the tour because there was a major long line (and I've seen plenty of dairy operations up close and in person in my life) and went to Cape Meares and visited the lighthouse and saw porpoises (we think) swimming in the ocean. The weather was beautiful the whole day.

The next day we headed to Silver Falls and did the full 7.2 mile 10-falls loop. It was much more crowded than the cliff-side hike at the coast, and the hiking was more like "trail walking" than really hiking - much less rugged/mountainous than the hike along the coast cliffs. However, Silver Falls didn't disappoint. Very beautiful. Great recommendation.

We also stopped in Idaho and saw Shoshone Falls but it was pretty disappointing as the falls were only running at about 25% capacity due to all the river water being diverted for irrigation. It would be cool to see at full capacity some day.

Now we're glad to be back in Utah where the temperature is projected to be a balmy 100 degrees instead of the brutal 112-115 degrees projected for Portland and Salem over the next week.

We came in from Carson City, stayed down by Stateline, and then drove around the south end as far as Tahoma before turning back. Is there a significant difference between driving down the east versus west side? If we're going from Incline to Emerald Bay, it makes sense to just drive the whole thing to see something different. But if the east side is a prettier view, we could just stick to that.

Parasailing sounds like fun - we'll have to give that some thought. We'll be in Incline Village - is Kings Beach the best beach on the north shore as far as planning to spend a day in the sand? What are the other options if it gets crowded that you like?
Since Emerald Bay is roughly halfway around the lake from Incline, you should definitely try each side. The Nevada side is nearly deserted for a fifteen-mile stretch, but the west shore is more interesting with more lake views. And King's Beach is good; it's crowded for a reason. On the way north from Emerald Bay, you'll pass through Meeks Bay which has a nice beach but you have to pay to park there.

Depends on what you want. I don't care much for South Shore (borrowing a phrase from Yogi Berra, nobody goes there, it's too crowded), but the night life can be appealing. The West Shore is quieter; North Shore has better access to ski resorts and golf (except for Edgewood at South Shore).

Marc Zuckerberg's finishing a modest home just south of Tahoe City, and the former Godfather II filming location was converted into a very lux development of a few VERY nice homes on the water. The location a couple miles north of our condo in Tahoma. There are some great places in/near incline, including one my friend is staying at next week that's supposedly valued at around $40 Million--lots of lakefront footage. I'll let you know if it comes on the market.

You packed some solid areas in your coast vacation. Glad you had a good time.

I am enjoying your notes. We are planning to do the Oregon coast next year with hopefully watching the Track World Championships at Tracktown USA the 21st and 22nd of July.

            • Well - it was 115* in Portland Monday - and it was still June. Makes me fearful of July and August when the real heat comes to town.

                • The trip to Europe this fall just hit a speed bump. Our flight into Switzerland was cancelled. Looks like I'm going to have to add a leg each way and route through Paris or Amsterdam. But first I have to get through to a Delta representative to get them to change my flight. Was on hold eight hours yesterday before my cell phone dropped the call. I guess that's the limit for a call on T-Mobile. It dropped at 7:59:59. Now I'm waiting for a text message from them.

                  • Yep, I had to add a leg which sucks, but for now the flights are all set. Chances things flare up in the next two months? I feel pretty good. Europe is doing a better job of vaccinating now than parts of the US. I'm looking at y'all, Cuffers in the South!

I know several people that have been to Europe recently. If you can get over there now, then go. Things are pretty much fully open and there are very limited tourists so you kind of have the run of whatever you want. A coworker just got back from London and he said he had his own pod in the London Eye. That’s unheard of at any point in time but especially so in summer when tourism is typically at its peak.

At this point, I think people are learning to live with Covid. Cases might climb but hospitalizations are staying flat, mostly thanks to vaccinations.

I have no idea why there would be so few tourists in England right now.

On arrival in England you must:
                        • quarantine at home or in the place you are staying for 10 days
                        • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8

Yeah, I guess I should mention he did have to quarantine for 5 days. I think he found a way to reduce it from 10 to 5 he has family there so he just stayed with them for five days then they did the touristy stuff. I think he got approval from work to just work remotely during his quarantine so he didn’t burn vacation days sitting around.

Italy is doing Covid free flights where no quarantine is required. Croatia and Greece are doing something similar but I think they only require proof of vaccine to avoid quarantine.

if you haven’t hiked in Iao Valley before, that’s a beautiful short hike not too far away from where you’re staying.
