  • Yeah it's been pretty toasty here in AZ, too. I mean... duh.

115F in Portland... Could be worse:

Hotter than the human body can handle: Pakistan city broils in world’s highest temperatures

When the full midsummer heat hits Jacobabad, the city retreats inside as if sheltering from attack.

The streets are deserted and residents hunker down as best they can to weather temperatures that can top 52C (126F).

Few have any air conditioning, and blackouts mean often there is no mains electricity. The hospital fills with heatstroke cases from those whose livelihoods mean they must venture out.

“When it gets that hot, you can't even stay on your feet,” explains one resident, Zamir Alam.

“It's a very, very difficult time when it goes beyond 50C. People do not come out of their houses and the streets are deserted,” Abdul Baqi, a shopkeeper, adds.

I remember the summer of aught-three in the Iraq desert. That was a hot one. Even the locals said it was unseasonably warm. Riding around in my truck with the windows down, it felt like I was in a convection oven.

And that stuff is deadly. There was at least one military fatality I remember from the heat.

My kids hate it when I say, "Hot? You call this Hot?! Why, I remember the summer of aught-three..."

Yeah, I remember about 20 years ago driving through Salton City, or some similar place near the Salton Sea in Southern California. It was 112 and when I mentioned the heat some local replied with "this ain't hot", then went on to talk about other times when it was hotter.

Supposed to get up to 104 in the Boise/Meridian area today. I'm hunkering down by my air conditioner hoping the power doesn't go out again like it did yesterday (which wasn't actually a big deal).

          • On Monday the temp dropped from 115 to 75 in about 90 minutes - was really a weird feeling.

            • It was so hot in Oregon they told people to gas up their own damn cars at service stations… amazing.

              • I’m pretty sure people in Oregon don’t know how to pump their own gas

My youngest daughter doesn’t. She was commenting on the anxiety she feels pumping her own gas.

Maybe now Oregon will remove that stupid rule.

Don't hold your breath. It came up for a vote a few years ago and it didn't pass.

                            • I lived in Oregon years ago, and used to hear people talk about the devastation that would result if people were allowed to pump their own gas. The rationales I remember now were that they would lose a ton of jobs and that old people would be forced to give up driving because they wouldn't be able to fill the tank themselves. I think there were a few more as well. The obvious rebuttal was that 48 states had made the switch, and the sky didn't seem to be falling (at the time NJ was still a holdout, not sure if they still are). They would insist that no, things were actually terrible in all those states.

It was a good lesson about how people make up their mind, and how tough it is to convince people to change an opinion.

My in laws never fill up their cars in Oregon despite the fact they live there. They instead fill up in Caldwell because gas is cheaper there. They used to have a gas co-op in town as well where they could pump their own gas, but I think it was dissolved a decade ago.

One time on a trip to the coast, I stopped to fill up and got out and started the process. A kid came running out and told me I wasn’t allowed to pump my own gas. I then remembered the law and let him finish the process but by that point it was already done except for putting the pump handle back. I didn’t tip him.
