Inverter generators are supposed to be quieter, but I haven't tested them out.

Apparently there are lots of frozen and busted pipes... Plumbers are now charging $300-400/hr and are at least 2-3 days out.

Yeah, I hope Texas learned its lesson...

Chuck Schumer rips Texas for ignoring climate change

US Sen. Chuck Schumer on Sunday slammed Texas for getting caught off guard by last week’s massive winter storm — saying the Lone Star State is paying the price for ignoring climate change.
        [...]

Yeah, we learned our lesson, Chuck. Just like the folks in Louisiana learned their lesson for Katrina and California has been learning their lesson every year with their fires and blackouts.

BTW, it is 70 degrees today. Tomorrow's high is going to be nearly 80. We are paying the price!

Don't forget Chuck's home state ignoring climate change when Hurricane Sandy hit. I hope they learned their lesson!

I've been doing some research on how to wire up my generator and I'm curious about your use of the term "transfer switch". The Internet seems to indicate that a "transfer switch" is used to power specific breakers, whether manual or automatic switchover. You have to choose which specific circuits you want to power and then hardwire them to your transfer switch. The only difference between a manual and automatic transfer switch is whether you switch to generator power manually or automatically.

The internet says an "interlock switch" is what you use when your generator powers the entire panel, to ensure the generator breaker that is back-feeding the panel can't be on at the same time as the main breaker. In order to use generator power you must turn off all the breakers, turn on the generate and flip the interlock switch, then manually turn on the generator's breaker. Then you can manually switch on specific circuit breakers.

Transfer switch (has a set of specific breakers hardwired to specific circuits):
            TransferSwitch.png

Interlock switch (the generator breakers on the left backfeed the whole panel):
            InterlockSwitch.png

So, just to clarify, when you say you used a "manual transfer switch" are you talking a full-blown transfer switch like in the top picture, or are you talking about an interlock switch like in the bottom picture?

My transfer switch is a manual switch that switches the "mains" to a sub panel from the utility to the generator or vice versa. And yes, it has an interlock switch to prevent that the generate doesn't back feed the grid.

                  URGENT WEATHER WARNING

Portland up to 115* this weekend. Records will be smashed. Supposed to be 95* at the beach. Mother nature doesn't know I have a secret weapon - and am willing to pay to use it.

If you run a trickle of cold water from your hose - onto the motor of your air conditioning fan - the cold trickle of water will keep the fan motor from over heating and shutting down. As the cold water hits the blades of the fan it flips it up in the air creating a evaporative misty zone around the air conditioner and keeping the coolant fins cooler than usual with the mist of the water floating in the air. Been using this method for two days - and the old Lennox is a happy as a clam as it pumps 58* air into our well insulated house.

Bring it on - I can sit home all day long.

transformers in our neighborhood keep blowing up. i have a 30a receptacle that backfeeds power to the entire panel, so i just turn off unnecessary breakers. i have the trifuel firman gen from costco, and it will start and run our a/c.
