I'm going to Panama next month...anything I should watch out for there? Pray tell.

Unlike yourself, my wife and kids are actually Hispanic. They don't pretend on the internet. So yes I have been to Central America on several different occasions. Panama is a slight upgrade over Costa Rica depending on where you visit.Originally posted by wuapinmon View Post

According to a recent DNA test, I have <1% of my ancestry from the Iberian Peninsula. My wife has 3%. DNA is bullshit. We were thinking of doing a Costa Rica trip this spring. I got a little nervous after doing some research. We are doing Maui instead."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Somebody visited the State Department website, apparently. Right now the only country I'd hesitate to visit without a local contact would be Venezuela. That's somewhere I'd definitely want someone who knew the ropes to get me settled. Most everywhere else seems reasonably stable these days. Argentina seems like a mess, but I wouldn't worry about safety. Talked with some friends who just got back. They had a good time, but had a long list of caveats and warnings ("Just make sure you never..."). Also read the reviews on a number of the resorts hotels. More caveats and warnings.Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostWhat was it that gave you pause?
Tough to beat Kaanapali beach.

We did just the opposite. We had a great 12 days. No problems, great weather, people were friendly. I was getting some groceries at the local store (about 15x15 square feet). I saw they had peanut butter but couldn't find honey. Some random guy overheard me asking the owner if they had honey. When the owner said no, this guy said he would have some for me in the morning. He went out that night and harvested some wild honey and had a bottle for me the next day.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostWe were thinking of doing a Costa Rica trip this spring. Part of the issue is that April/May seems like the rainy season down there. And my kids were expecting and planning on Maui. I would have had to convince them that Costa Rica is a better option. Didn't see how I could make that case under the circumstances. Maybe someday."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? April is dry, but May can be extremely rainy. It once rained 42 days straight on us, so the worry about rain in some parts cannot be overestimated. However, the Pacific coast is tropical dry forest, not rain or cloud forest, so that side is far better. As for resorts, I couldn't say, that's not my thing. But, I've been to Kaanapali, and it is beautiful, and you're in the USA. As for Maui being so much better, each to their own.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostYeah, I read some reviews like that too.

If you ever decide to try Costa Rica, just give me a call. I can give you an itinerary that will be a lot of fun. hostile's experience and ER Cougar's are far more common than cougjunkie's misanthropy."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action.
