I was talking to an LDS gentleman today, and I asked him about the upcoming game. He soured immediately and said he's sworn off BYU football so long as Max is under center. He said he thinks Max is a lousy quarterback. I was kind of surprised by this. Is this a fairly common sentiment that I've just missed up til now? Or is this guy an aberration?

I don't think it's a typical attitude. Most fans know he's been a pretty good college QB. He has limitations. He doesn't have a strong arm. But he's smart and pretty accurate.

Off topic and annoying grammar point, but this is a good teaching moment. "Begs the question" is used incorrectly almost 99% of the time you hear it used.

Apologies work at BYU, too.

When I was in undergrad, BYU was playing Our Lady on NBC. John Walsh was the QB. The cameras caught him saying the F-word, although there was no audio. It became a big to-do around campus. A week or so later, John Walsh wrote a letter of apology to the Daily Universe for saying the inaudible F-word on national TV.

Maybe Max should publicly apologize for dragging down the program to these horrible 10-win plateaus.

I wonder if Detmer ever wrote an apology for the clearly audible F-bomb he dropped in the Shrine game or one like it.

Since it was after the Sr. season ended, he probably didn't have to.

The funniest apology though ever is Scalli Utah who called either the fans or players at BYU pricks. BYU fans (some) were up in arms. How could a RM use such a word!! He actually apologized, I lost a lot of respect for him when he did.

I agree, that one bugs me. But since its used wrong 99% of the time, I'm ready to concede that maybe its meaning has changed in popular usage. I.e., its time to let go...

It is unreasonable to expect Hall to have a good, let alone great, performance every time he plays a really good team.

However, that statement does not preclude the possibility that he can beat Oklahoma and/or TCU and/or Florida State and/or Utah by having a really good performance.
