Fair enough. If I understand correctly, you're saying I cannot expect Max to have a great performance against TCU AND Utah this year, as not even Detmer or McMahon were Superman against great defenses.Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostThe premise is if BYU has had great QBs in the past, then let's look at how they performed in similar situations to gauge what a reasonable expectation is for the current QB who isn't necessarily a great BYU QB.
If you can determine that the standard you are looking for is not to be consistently found in the great BYU QBs of the past, then you can reasonably conclude that your standard is unreasonable and you are inevitably headed for disappointment.
That is depressing.

Apologies work at BYU, too.Originally posted by Babs View Postyeah, but he apologized a bunch.
When I was in undergrad, BYU was playing Our Lady on NBC. John Walsh was the QB. The cameras caught him saying the F-word, although there was no audio. It became a big to-do around campus. A week or so later, John Walsh wrote a letter of apology to the Daily Universe for saying the inaudible F-word on national TV.
Maybe Max should publicly apologize for dragging down the program to these horrible 10-win plateaus.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Can we get into the reasons why it's unreasonable to expect a BYU quarterback to perform well against every team he plays?

Of course not - we don't know before hand which games they will play well in and which they won't, but when Hall's career is over and we look back on how he played, it is no shame to have some games in which he didn't play great or even good.Originally posted by JohnnyLingo View PostSo it was unreasonable to expect a great performance out of him against TCU and Utah last year.
Every QB has bad games, makes bad decisions in clutch situations and plays poorly against good teams sometime in their careers.I'm like LeBron James.

Well seeing how you seem to ignore Max going 2-0 against those two teams in 2007....
McMahon probably had the easiest schedule of any starting QB in BYU history, so I'm not sure he ever played against a great defense. He blew a perfect season in 1980 by losing to a 4-7 New Mexico team (only 147 yards passing!).
Detmer had a couple of very good games against some good teams, but he also had his share of clunkers against great teams (8 for 26 vs Penn State in 1991 and so forth)
You have a very selective filter, JL.

I've addressed this: why is past performance a perfect guarantee of future results when it comes to BYU quarterbacks? You have a very selective filter, JL.
Look, I understand that a terrible game is going to pop up from time to time. What bothers me is that against the two best defenses Hall faced last season, he laid stinky, stinky eggs. That is the beginning of a pattern. If he struggles against TCU and Utah again this season, I'd say it's more than your run-of-the-mill "everyone has a bad day" -itis.Has there ever been a QB, college or pro, who has played well against every team he has played against and in every clutch situation he was a part of?
