Ty definitely takes part of the blame though. Not unexpected with a new staff either. I remain optimistic that with the right personnel and some experience that he will be a very good coach.

    • Tough to get a read on this team. Is the difference between 1-3 and 3-1 just on the QB? I keep hearing there is a talent gap between BYU and these P5 schools. I don't think there's much of a gap, especially on defense. I mean West Virginia ( and half of the Big 12) put up 30 plus points on teams with plenty of 4 and 5 star recruits.

I agree. He was dealt a spotty O-line and he's trying to get up to speed at the D1 level as well as implement a new offense which is much different than what Anae ran (at least at the Oline level). He also has a spread QB running a pro-style offense (but that was his choice). This is also no cake walk when it comes to schedules. I like the coaches and they deserve a long leash, which I think most BYU fans are giving them.

Unfortunately there are more than a few idiots who are already extremely upset with Detmer and Sitake. Some of these idiots are my fb friends.

it's part of it, I'm overall feeling patient with the new coaches, they will grow in to their roles. Part of it is recruiting. We need better athletes, I hope Kalani can close the gap we have when we play Utah's defensive line. I hate losing to them because they erode at our recruits and there's a good 6-8 guys starting on their team that would have been BYU players in years past.

The two point conversions were bad calls, but I thought the offensive line gave Taysom a clean pocket today. Some of those younger guys like Shoaf looked pretty good. Was surprised our defense played so bad, but that's a good offense. They'll probably average close to 40 points a game this year.

                They're crazy. 4 TDs and 7 picks.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                • I give Sitake and Detmer a long leash. If we go 1-11 this year it isn't a reflection on coaching.

Here are my thoughts on the game:

                  1. Offensive line played great today.
                  2. Special teams is awesome. Outside of 1 kick off, they had horrible field position all day today. Ed Lamb is the man.
                  3. Defense was not great today. They were good enough. I think this was their worst performance of the season.
                  4. Jamal Williams was a beast. It is a shame that they didn't go to him more in the 4th quarter. He should have had some touches on those last two drives.
                  5. Taysum Hill is the wrong QB for this offense. No touch, dumb decisions. He would flourish in the Navy offense. Pro Style isn't his thing. He operates well in the hurry up offense and that is it.

I noticed the Troy Warner played early but never played again. I'm assuming the hamstring is still an issue. I also didn't see Trinneman get much run today if any.

Oh well. Bowl game is now in question.

                  • I will also add this...I think Sitake is just what the BYU/Utah relationship needs. Even here SU is a show of that.

I don't mind when Utah wins games. It is good for them and their program. The recruits that we get aren't going to change depending on their success or failures. Maybe its just me.

I'm happy for my Ute friends when their team wins. I would say a majority of my Ute friends feel the same way when BYU wins. There is no hate with my people.

I agree with you except that SU is on record with his opinion that Sitake is a mediocre coach and an ungrateful, petty man. Feel free to correct me.

The season up to this point, culminating in today's loss has been enough to make me come to this place and post about the game ... it's that frustrating:

There's been some real head-scratching play calls, especially in the red zone but overall the scheme looks sound. It's wise to be patient concerning Detmer. Because it's clear the receivers are really disappointing. Is it a lack of athleticism—is that why they can't catch the ball, let alone make any kind of adjustment to catch a ball? And how do you not know to get out of bounds?

It's an indictment against Bronco (I certainly was not sad he left) that BYU can't field even one serviceable tightend. The running game is inconsistent, but that has a lot to do with scheme and play calling, and the offensive line (again and indictment against Bronco); that and the fact BYU has played some outstanding defenses. If we are honest, Anae gets alot more out of all of the backs in the stable, not just Williams. The defense is stout, and will only get better. Special teams are improved.

Lastly, the biggest disappointment this season is the play of the fifth-year senior QB. Before the season, it was realistic to predict BYU would go 1-4 due mostly to the schedule. It's surprising that the biggest reason they are 1-4 is primarily due to the starting QB.

Yes, the play call was awful, but How does a fifth-year senior QB not know and SEE that Whittingham is going to sell out and send the kitchen sink at you? Audible! How many times is Hill going to overthrow open receivers on the long ball, against UCLA and tonight? Ugh ... Oh, well. On to next week. Go Cougars.

                          Oh B.S.

Bronco's offense did not feature a tight end so how can he be blamed for not heavily recruiting them? We need to get away from blaming Bronco for every woe.

I thought Detmer did a good job today. There were a couple of puzzling things but I'm not sure if they are on Ty or Taysom. Overall I think the coaches are ahead of the curve for their first season.

                            • I'm trying to have some perspective. With the new coaching staff and the schedule, a 1-3 start was not going to be a surprise. But obviously having a chance to win each of the games at the end (except UCLA I guess) makes it harder to keep that perspective. It's not a stretch to say we'd be 3-1 with a little better execution. Sorry for the Bronco speak.

We very well could be 4-0 but a BRAND NEW offense does take some time to get rolling. I totally see where people are coming from about reshuffling the deck.
