I don't feel like I need to know any West Virginians to hate their school: BYU vs WVU

  • I had to leave for my son's game at halftime, so I didn't have to face the heartbreak of losing another winnable game. That being said, I have a few thoughts:

    1. WVU is a good offensive team. They had an excellent gameplan for us, and the Holgerson offense is sort of what Anae's GFGH should have looked like. When it is well executed by a good QB, it is very, very difficult to stop. I'm not upset by the defensive showing, when you adjust for degree of difficulty. I am still pleased with Tuiaki and the defense, and I think they'll only get better.

    2. I love Taysom, and will always remember the good times. I don't really care about Taysom vs Tanner, because it's becoming clearer and clearer that this transition to a pro-style offense will be a 2 year project.

    3. Some JC offensive recruiting may be what the doctor ordered. Simply need more O line, WR, RB, TE depth.

    4. I am convinced that we will be just fine when we are in a P5 conference, once Kalani gets going and the P5 recruiting kicks in.

To sum up: the loss hurts but it's not like it was unexpected, I still think Kalani is the right guy, I still am pleasantly surprised with Tuiaki, I still think Ty will figure it out but it will take time, I wish Taysom the best and appreciate all he's given for the program, I can't wait to get 2-3 recruiting classes in under Kalani, and it will be fun to kick WVU's butt when we're in the Big 12.

      • my biggest takeaway is that Detmer needs to decide if he's going to run tempo and turn Hill loose or run his offense with Tanner. each week it's becoming more and more clear Hill is much more comfortable running tempo while looking lost and uninspired running that methodical, huddle up offense Ty has wanted to run.

Agreed. I don't understand why they don't play Tanner. He's the one who would do well in the system Detmer wants to implement. They should be developing him and not a guy who's going to graduate.
          Not that, sickos.

A case to be made, sure, but I don't think it's a winning case. Taysom is a fine QB, with skills tanner does not have. I think Taysom is the guy you want while the new offense is under construction. Once the pieces start coming together, Tanner will step in and the offense could be scary good.

This year brings 2005 to mind. Then, as now, a brand new OC putting together his offense for the first time had in mind something somewhat different than the offense for which his personnel were best suited. Anae wanted to run an air raid spread, but that wasn't as well suited for weapons like Curtis Brown and Johnny Harline. We made some adjustments after going 1-3, made it to a bowl game, and saw four years of dominant production.

We're learning where our yards are going to come from and who (and what) to go to. Our O is going to be fine.

We aren't doing a whole lot of winning at the moment so the case for Tanner is probably stronger than you think.

Here's how I sum up Taysom: great runner who can make throws which he can rocket in under twenty yards with average accuracy. Anything longer that requires arc and touch will be overthrown or intercepted.

Protection was good yesterday folks so that can't be an excuse. We have Jamal to run the ball now it's time to try a more accurate thrower.

                    • I agree with Shaka. Sort of a shame we haven't given Tanner the experience so far. Can't say for sure our record would be any better but our QB of the future would be farther along. It's hard to think of any good reason to let Taysom keep playing at this point.

How about our kickoffs and kickoff coverage though? I can't remember any BYU team that did it better -- high kicks down to the goal line with the returner being swarmed between 10 and 15 yard line? Ridiculously good.

we pay our special teams coach a relatively very large amount of money. they better be good.

The only teams our opponents have lost to (other than AZ's loss to us) are ranked. We played four good teams and almost beat each of them. We're not so far from where we need to be.

Point is our record would be the same or better with tanner and our future qb would not lose a year of experience

                              Yep. That's been a highlight.

But he would lose a year of eligibility.
