The safety made sense. If they blow the punt and give ASU field position to get a field goal the game was over. Best chance was to give the 2 points, flip the field and then get a stop. Couldn't get the stop.

If that's true, they fully, richly deserved to lose. Can't imagine Nebraska's fanbase can be too thrilled with the new regime's antics. There's only so much you can forgive of a first year coach.

To follow-up with the incomplete pass on 3rd and 7 with 55 seconds on the clock, Mike Riley decided not to let his FG kick attempt a 44-yard FG. Nebraska's kicker was 2/2 with the wind; the attempt would have been into the wind. But make the FG and Nebraska is up by 9 and the game is over. Instead Nebraska passed incomplete and gave the ball back to Illinois with 0:51 left-a missed FG would have left the same amount of time on the clock. The odds were better that Nebraska makes the FG then Nebraska makes the first down. This loss was worse than the BYU loss. mpfunk was right - Mike Riley is not a very good football coach. Nebraska deserved to lose this one.
