A lot to be puffed up about if you're Utah. Can't wait for the inevitable deflation. They do play Washington State this year, right?

LOL! You don't know anything about what it is like to be a Utah fan! Most of the veteran fans were watching the game, up 50-something to 13 in the 3rd, and still clenching sphincter that the wheels were going to somehow come off of the miraculous run our squad was making. Most of us still can't fully believe that 2004 and 2008 ever happened, or are left to assume they were somehow the result of the space-time continuum ripping and allowing us a glimpse of some version of the dimension where Clack omits grey font in his posts and the Utes are always contenders.

No, I don't think that the deflation among Utah fans this season will be anywhere near as epic as it usually is among the cougar faithful, because we remain grounded in the safety of our ritual pessimism!!

I agree that this weekend is a very strong data point for the argument against God's existence, though probably for somewhat different reasons than yours. Yesterday's debacle was so perfect, so complete, that it could not have possibly happened without some sort of divine orchestration. Indeed, it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly terrible could have occurred purely by chance that you may see it as a final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God. The argument goes something like this:

"I refuse to prove that I exist," says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But," says Blueintheface, "BYU was shut out by Michigan, whom Utah beat, while Utah proceeded to open up a can on OREGON. That's a dead giveaway, isn't it? That couldn't have happened by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."
"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
"Oh, that was easy," says Blueintheface, and for an encore goes on to suggest that LaVell was merely mortal, and gets killed by an angry mob of CBers.

If there is a thread that runs through the entire Bible it's that God has to beat down His people to keep them meek and humble. God's folks need to be meek and humble or they cease to be His people, and winning invariably begets pride. That's what was wrong with the Assyrians, the Philistines and the Romans. This is one of the chief proofs against Mormonism being His Church--Mormons have this schizophrenic competitive drive and craving for worldly acceptance and recognition. One of the chief proofs for it is that BYU gest beat down so much.
