I think that means we can say they are supposed to be good. I don't how you can say that they are good at this point. It is just too early. Yes, they are supposed to be pretty good, so I can see them finishing at 9-3 or 8-4, but I can also see 7-5, 6-6, or 5-7.I'm like LeBron James.

The Finebaum tweet was a joke. It is interesting that people keep biting on it though. Says something about Saban, I think, that people would believe he would bail on his team mid-season.Originally posted by Surfah View Post

Miami and OU were both ranked a lot higher and had true NC expectations. There was some talk of that for Texas but their level of play the last few years didn't justify it. I see this more like our two wins over ND. It's a great win over a big name. It also cements our series lead (3-1) through this set of games.Originally posted by byu71 View PostI don't put this win from my fan perspective in the same category as Miami or Oklahoma at Jerry World, but it is right up there with the second tier.

They've played in the national title game twice in the last decade, and may have won both if McCoy hadn't dislocated his shoulder.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWhat do you mean by "elite?" All time elite, definitely not in that category.
they are second tier elite, not top tier. Maybe along with the georgias of the world, florida, etc. The cream of the crop would include Alabama, Notre Dame, SC, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State. Using measuring sticks that I listed previously. I dont count Princeton and Yale and other schools that dont play football anymore and only played it when there were around 20 teams playing at all.
woot pointed out all time wins, which would put Texas in the same category as elite NBA coaches Lenny Wilkens, Don Nelson, and Bill Fitch. And of course, you would have to discount their win loss record to take into account that Texas has historically played D2 schools to pad both its win and loss record. SC and notre dame have never played a D2 school, so that should be taken into account. If SC or Notre Dame played a D2 school once a year or every other year, you could probably add 50 or so wins and remove 50 or so losses (just a guess, but you get my point) and who knows what the improved win loss record would have done to their respective chances to play for even more titles and win even more Heismans?
Besides hats and t shirts, what metrics are you using to put Texas in the same class as those other schools? Texas is a great program, dont get me wrong, but the "fertile recruiting grounds of Texas" is, as I mentioned, the biggest myth in college football. Unless you want to sell a lot of hats.

twice? thats fewer than SC and Alabama. texas also won zero Heismans in that time period. Alabama won one and SC won three. Thank you for proving my point. Texas is good, just not good enough!Originally posted by UVACoug View PostThey've played in the national title game twice in the last decade, and may have won both if McCoy hadn't dislocated his shoulder.Fitter. You are being trolled here. There are subtle indicators to look for. For instance, DDD placed ND and SC in the elite cateogy.Originally posted by UVACoug View PostThey've played in the national title game twice in the last decade, and may have won both if McCoy hadn't dislocated his shoulder.

Ash may miss this week's game against Ole Miss. Djae has already been ruled out.
Among all the interesting stats from Saturday's game this one blew me away: BYU ran 72 times and was only tackled for a loss twice. That is amazing considering how many times Jamal was stuffed two yards deep against UVA. The OL did work."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I continue to be very impressed with how hard Jamal Williams runs the football - seems to be something that can't be taught, either a tailback has it or he doesn't (Gray of Texas who was the top RB recruit in the country doesn't seem to have that skill despite having all the physical ability he could ask for) - and how well he holds on to the football. Has he lost a fumble yet in his career? I've probably said it a hundred times on here, but BYU is so fortunate to have him.I'm like LeBron James.

Aha... When you said:Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostMy point being that the silver lining for the Texas football myth is that its best players leave the state and go help other schools win championships. The Texas football myth as it pertains to UTs program among the elite schools is alive and well.
I thought you were ... you know ... talking about the talent pool in the state of Texas.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostPerhaps the only bigger urban legend in sports besides NYC being a basketball Mecca is the Texas talent pool depth. Add up all the national titles and heismans won by all of the Texas schools and compare them to the traditnal powers from SEC, SC, B10. What a joke. the State of Texas is the biggest underachiever in all of college football. An entire state that has done so little with so much.
The Heisman Trophy has been awarded 77 times. 11 of the winners were from the state of Texas. That is 14% or 1 out of 7.
The state of California is #1 with 14 winners.
Looking at population, California is #1 and Texas #2. Based on population alone, one would expect Texas to get 6.7 awards, and California would get 9.8. Based on that, Texas is overachieving at a rate of 1.65 and California is overachieving at a rate of 1.44."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? I think he did, but yes, BYU recovered. I say I think he did, because I what I don't remember is if it was a legit fumble (did he ever really have the ball or was it a bad exchange) or not. But yes, there was a fumble and BYU recovered.Originally posted by Surfah View PostHe fumbled last week but it was recovered right?I'm like LeBron James.
