Yes, get in a conference. Athletes want something to play for besides spirit and honor. The current situation at BYU would not have appealed to me when I was seventeen years old and I was raised a die hard.

You reap what you sew and unfortunately I think a tougher recruiting environment could easily be a byproduct of independence.

OK I'll give my own summation.

Who wants to play for a school who:

Isn't in a conference and therefore has nothing to play for.
Has very restrictive behavioral standards which go above and beyond what's expected of a regular member.
Has a very intelligent student body with some of the negatives that come with it.
Has a very limited recruiting pool and is experienced increased competition for that pool from other universities.

The combination of the above is starting to become less and less appealing to recruits.

        Kyle Van Noy, for one.

Look, we lost a game we should have won. It happens. Nut up and get ready for Texas.

Who's the next Kyle Van Noy?

If our line doesn't make significant progress this week we are in deep trouble this week.

            Taysom Hill.

Yeah, the offense in general needs to make significant progress. They gave a few reasons late in the game to think that we might make that progress. It's not time to hang up the hat yet.

I think Taysom has it. However I don't think the line is up to par and will inhibit him to the point BYU fans will be calling for Olsen. Hell, many already are.

              Our offensive line is bad.

Does anyone have an official tally of which offensive linemen played? There has to be 5 of the 11 who can play as least as good as eastern Washington.

                • We were at the game and I echo Surfah's experience. Four hour drive took six to the game. Left at 8am got home at close to 3 am. Couple of thoughts, Hill isn't as good BYU fans think he should be. The Cav's defensive line was much bigger then BYU's offensive line. Somehow despite poor play calling and the size difference the Cougars should have won this game.

We briefly got separated when a deputy told my dad and brother they had to leave. But once the storm was overhead the same cop was telling everyone to come back into the stadium to take shelter. It was nuts. Also, the storm briefly knocked out power. We were told the scoreboard went down. Back up lights came on in the area we were in. So we waited out the delay there. Once the delay was over all of the outside vendors were told they couldn't sell anything. They didn't know why. The stadium concessions in our section would only take cards as their cash registers all went down in the storm and they didn't have anything that had to be cooked. The only concessions that seemed to be operational were on the field level and that was a charlie foxtrot if I've ever seen one.

It was the worst game experience I have ever had. The company I was with was the only redeeming thing about the game. And the Ute fan that showed up.
Agreed on all accounts. The Ute fan just added to the shitty experience. It couldn't have been scripted any better.

                      • I actually think we have 5 capable lineman. Thr problem is finding them. The most successful unit I believe consisted of Aletto, Stringham, Wesley, Mathews (I was wrong in a previous post he was with this unit) and I am not sure who the other guard was. This unit was very solid and did a nice job. All that substituting killed the flow.

The two receivers on the left (on the byu's right side) both look like they're on the line of scrimmage. I know the slot-guy is barely over the 5 yard line, but it's still close enough that I've seen "ineligible receiver" called on formations like this.

But hey, maybe it was a run.

Tough loss, cougars, but you'll bounce back. I was actually at the byu game in 1988 when the byu put the hurt on the Longhorns (IIRC, Metcalfe was their burner). It'll be okay.

I think we need three more capable guys as depth is a huge issue. I really want to BYU to kick ass but there are some glaring problems that somehow have to be resolved. Hopefully the coaches can find some of issues in the film room and get them fixed this week.

I admit, the though occurred to me that Olsen might well be better, and we'd have no way of knowing it.

With the way our line played Olsen would not have faired well.
