Admissions is not the same as it's been for fifteen or twenty years. Not even close. Academic standards at BYU started ratcheting up in the late eighties. The requirements for football players did not follow suit until after Crowton. This is one of the major reasons the poly pipeline has dried up. For that reason alone we can't get the same athletes. It is also one of the major reasons the poly pipeline has dried up.The combination of all the rest is what makes things tough for BYU. Add in the emergence of Utah and Utah State and BYU is playing on a very different field than it did under Lavell. Even Stanford is competition. Bo McNally, who would have made a great BYU recruit in spite of growing up in the shadow of the U), chose Stanford.Originally posted by Surfah View Post
But the idea that the admin has stunted the growth and development of this program by way of the honor code, admissions or academics is just dumb. Those things are the same as they have always been for the last 15-20 years. I'll concede the days of sleeping off a hangover on the coach's couch is long gone, but we're a long ways away from those days..
Put yourself in a current prospect's shoes. I got my Duty to God and am an Eagle Scout but my 2.8 GPA will not get me into BYU. Also they aren't in a conference, I have to live an on-steroids version of my faith, I may have to speak in pregame firesides, and I have to shave to take a test. Hmmmm, maybe I'll still be able to live my faith and have a whole lot more fun at Utah......

I used to think this could be our year. However there's no way, considering our deficiencies, that BYU was going to make a run this year. We wouldn't have made a run if we had Vince Lombardi coaching and Ty coming back for an encore.Originally posted by Surfah View PostYou want to know what happened to BYU football? The rest of college football caught up to BYU. BYU's success pre-1996 has to do with scheme. Lavell turned college football on its head with the passing game. While we never had the most talent, we had a passing game that few could duplicate. That is until the rest of America started slinging the ball like BYU did.
And back to talent, BYU is never going to be the most talented team. They're never going to compete with the Oregons, Bamas and USCs as far as talent goes. But they're talented enough to make a run every few years like Utah and Boise State has. This year should have been our run. But Bronco and company bungled that. And that is why I am furious as a fan.
Also the reason Lavell was able to make up for the lack of talent was the passing game you cited. Once the other teams caught up/on and things got much tougher. These days a Robbie Bosco and a few Mark Bellinis isn't going to cut it.

I agree that Snyder is vastly superior to Bronco. It is amazing what he has done with ksu.Originally posted by Cougarmandias View PostAmen and amen.
Look at K-State. They've fallen just short of the NC game with a collection of lightly recruited players and no obvious talent pipe line. Because of that, they won't be good every year, and they'll be vulnerable to laying an egg like they did this weekend, but there is no reason BYU couldn't be doing what they're doing. We aren't. We aren't because our administration and our headcoach thinks that our football team is a morality play, and has forgotten that far and away the key ingredient to that morality play is winning.

Those kids didn't choose other schools because of BYU's difficult academic admission standards for the general student body. That is just silly. If a recruit qualifies under NCAA guidelines he gets in.Originally posted by Shaka View PostYup

No, he doesn't. BYU has higher standards for athletes than the minimum NCAA standard.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostThose kids didn't choose other schools because of BYU's difficult academic admission standards for the general student body.
