Also the reason Lavell was able to make up for the lack of talent was the passing game you cited. Once the other teams caught up/on and things got much tougher. These days a Robbie Bosco and a few Mark Bellinis isn't going to cut it.
OK, but the expectations that we were/are going to make a run was fostered by the coaches too. If the coach thinks he can't recruit the talent he needs to be competitive, he should say so. If he thinks he can, why hasn't he, or is his judgment just that bad?
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

Exactly. Also BYU didn't recruit him when he came out of Snow did they? He might have been theirs for the taking given his previous signing.

The Eagles may be the only team in America would rather have Riley, than their current cadre of QBs.

BTW, if you haven't figured it out, I'm agreeing with you. I know, it seems weird to me too.

          • Teams with less talent are still doing amazing things with the passing game in the past few years.

To act like that is some relic of the past is wrong.

Houston under Sumlin, LA Tech, Baylor, even Marshall is averaging 360 yards passing a game.

                • I'm anti-independence almost as much as I am anti-Big East, anti-MWC....

If we had the old MWC with Utah, TCU, and even added Boise St I would take that over independence, but no current conference short of Big-12 or Pac is worth it.

                  • Independence would be fine if we had played a real QB. I still think Doman and Mendenhall are not capable in their current roles, but a decent QB would cover up a lot of dumb assery.

                    Winning fixes everything, even independence.

                      Couple of thoughts:

1.) I don't think that independence, MWC or Big East are the issue. The reality is most of that are challenges that BYU deals with that are outside of BYU's control. We like to blame Cecil or the quorum of the 12 but the reality is that I think BYU, as far as schedule and access to bowls etc, is in the best situation that it could be in. It is not a good situation but the reality is I believe it is the best that BYU could presently be in.

2.) The issue, at least for me, that encapsulates so much of what people bitch about and use anecdotal events to support their general dismay about BYU football is that I just don't think whoever is making the decisions for BYU wants BYU to be as good as it can be. There is a lot that goes into it but in the end I think BYU's decision makers put a limit on what BYU can be that takes the fun out of it for me. That is not to say I think BYU can be elite, I actually think my expectations for BYU and those of many of this venue are not congruent. But, the air of negativity that hangs over the program based upon what I think is a lack of trust in the decision makers goals for BYU football is killing it for me. I don't think they are trying to kill BYU football but I just think that they are satisified with the status quo. I don't think Mendenhall and Holmoe are, and I think they don't like it, but they have no choice but to soldier on and do their best. But for me, I am losing interest.

                      • BYU's problem is two fold.

First problem is the Offensive Coordinator. Doman's plays are terrible and he never used the talents of our WRs to make plays. He reverted to the ball control passing game which worked great under Hall and Beck because they were accurate but Doman refused to call plays to go vertical and stretch the defense which ended up hurting our running game.

2nd Problem is of course our QB. Riley Nelson is terrible and cannot throw the ball that well but in his defense, Doman never helped him out with his play calling. Riley would have done much better incorporating the Read Option but that was never used. Throwing downfield would have helped as well but even on the rare occasion a play was called to throw deep, Riley either audibled out of it or chose not to make the throw.

I cannot think of one timing route that Riley threw this year and due to his accuracy problems simply could not and cannot run the Offense that Doman wanted to run. That being said, for a guy that has more turnovers than touchdowns, there was never a leash with the guy like there was with Heaps last year. I am blown away at the the coaching staff for their failure to recognize failure.

They had no problem benching Tushaus or Stringham for bad play. They had no problem limiting Lasike's touches but they were blind to the pure shitiness of Riley Nelson. Here is a guy that single handedly cost us 4 games this year. FOUR!

Muffed Fumble against Utah which was run back. We lose by 3
Pick Six by Boise State. We lose by 1
Worst throw ever to Hoffman against ND which was a sure fire TD. Lose by 4
3 turnovers and a turnover on down inside the 20 against SJSU. We lose by 6

... And yet we hear coach speak from the coaches about grittiness and great effort. Bull Shit. The effort was poor and as shitty as Riley has been, this falls on Bronco and Doman.

If BYU, Utah and TCU had remained there along with Boise and they had somehow managed to overhaul their TV situation, it would have been an infinitely better setup than the Big Crappy East.
