Yeah Drew Phillips and Kori Gaines surely met those high academic standards. Bronco has raised the standards in the past two years because he is at risk of falling below the minimum APR required by the NCAA and possibly losing a bowl game from way too many burnouts and situations like Putnam and Manase Tonga. How you let a key player like Manase Tonga fall off the wagon in his senior season shows a program failure.Originally posted by Shaka View PostNo, he doesn't. BYU has higher standards for athletes than the minimum NCAA standard.

star could not make it into any division 1 school out of high school because of his academics. This is why he went to a junior college. it had nothing to do with BYU's standards.Originally posted by Shaka View PostStar Lotulelei blows this rebuttal out of the water."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

Yep BYU fans have been pulling this out of their ass. Star could have made it in to BYU easily after Snow. Bronco didn't want to risk it.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View Poststarted could not make it into any division 1 school out of high school because of his academics. We could have made a run with Feterik at QB though. An 11-1 run.Originally posted by Shaka View PostI used to think this could be our year. However there's no way, considering our deficiencies, that BYU was going to make a run this year. We wouldn't have made a run if we had Vince Lombardi coaching and Ty coming back for an encore.
Also the reason Lavell was able to make up for the lack of talent was the passing game you cited. Once the other teams caught up/on and things got much tougher. These days a Robbie Bosco and a few Mark Bellinis isn't going to cut it.

Olinemen usually have the highest average GPA on a college team. We have no excuses in this regard for why we don't have a great OLine. Trying to blame this all on outside forces is laughable.Originally posted by Shaka View PostJIC is right, Star was a non-qualifier all the way around. Probably not the best example.
With that said he somehow chose Utah over BYU despite being a BYU commit.
All you have to look at is what Bronco has done with the Riley Nelson situation to know that most of this comes from self inflicted wounds.

. However, I agree with him on this issue (even if pelagenius' stats don't back my claim).
In fact, just this morning I was thinking which QBs we've played against would I rather have than Riley. I would definitely take BSU, USU, OSU (either one), ND (either one), and SJSU. Utah and Wazzu are a push. I have no recollection of Weber, but I assume he sucked, so no on Weber, Idaho,GT, and likely NMSU.

Maybe he had time to consider the rate at which utah puts defensive lineman into the NFL. I tend to believe he chose Utah for Utah's sake as shocking as that might be.Originally posted by Shaka View PostJIC is right, Star was a non-qualifier all the way around. Probably not the best example.

May be a simple as Utah not giving up on recruiting him after he went the jc route. They got Dunn, Matt Asiata, Moe Lee, etc for the same reason. They kept tabs on them, even after they committed to other schools out of hs.Originally posted by Shaka View PostJIC is right, Star was a non-qualifier all the way around.
