Indy's right, you definitely don't want to go with "Didn't you take a stats class in college" in this situation (it deviates from stat class basics because we are not observing draws from a single random variable X but rather a cross-section X1, X2, .., Xn where n is reasonably large). But, on the other hand, Top Ute's follow up to PAC appears to have a bad statistical fallacy (what is often called the "law of small numbers") in his argument so it maybe you were just prescient.

There appears to be a very strong central tendency when it comes to close games, but there are a non-trivial number of teams that have seem to successfully over the long term cast off the shackles of the random coin flip. I think more research is needed, but I'm not sure I have the interest/energy to be that person.

I thought the mention of the past and Crowton's history in this regard was sufficient enough to indicate that I am more than aware that a 20-game sample size isn't sufficient enough to explain what I was trying to explain -- something I knew Indy would do much better anyway.

But an 18-2 multi-year run in games decided by 7 points or less is flat-out goofy. I wouldn't be surprised if no team in the history of college football had a similar or better run.

I'm sure there will be a lot of Taysoms born in the next few years, but I believe you're correct--by the time those young Taysoms are missionaries, T. Hill will have used up his eligibility. Then again, does he have a redshirt to burn still?

Because very few of us here were conscious of college football (or pretty much anything else) prior to 1970. Utah should bring in stats from the 30s and 40s, though. It's like Persia justifiably claiming more military victories than the U.S.

LA Ute, just for future reference (this is not some sort of rhetorical trick just curious) can you define what your consider poor, good, great, etc seasons?

Something like:
Great: top 10
good: top 11-20
Succesful: 21-40
Mediocre: 41-60
Poor: 60-80
Worth firing: > 80

(Cliche alert.) It depends. Generally what you've listed strikes me as a good set of objective standards. From a fan standpoint, however, which is usually anything but objective, many other factors come into play. For example, in 2011 I hoped/believed Utah would win 7-8 games, maybe 9 if they got really lucky. That was before Wynn went down and Whit had to throw John Hays into the fire. As Top Ute says, an 8-win first-year season in the PAC-12 with a D-II QB is nothing to be embarrassed about. I was very happy with the 2011 season and recognize how close it was to being a disaster.
