Yeah Utah is interesting. At my son's junior high more than 60% of the students live outside of the school boundaries. There are kids from Provo, Park City, Ogden, Sandy etc. whose parents all bring them to this public school in East Millcreek. The parents do it for academics and music more than for sports obviously at this age.

Yeah my son will go there next year. When I went to the preview a while ago I had no idea so many kids lived outside the boundaries.Originally posted by hostile View PostWasatch? My aunt teaches there.
Back to Wong, I'm hearing that most of the other teachers think he can keep his job. Also that Bayles was terrible with finances (obviously) and that various assistant principals, teachers, secretaries, etc. tried to set him straight over the years and he was an ass and refused to do the finances by the book. It seems to me like Bayles deserves 90%+ of the blame and that Wong should keep his job.

They started busing kids to Wasatch and Churchill (and then Skyline) when I was in junior high. Not so much academic reasons at the time, but the schools in Sandy (Alta and Brighton) were having major overcrowding problems. That doesn't really explain Provo/Park City/Ogden though, so maybe academics is the driver now.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostYeah Utah is interesting. I used to do some occasional auditing at schools when I was fresh out of college. I never audited a Provo school so I don't know their specific policies, but a little background on what I think is driving the investigation:
Deposits: I don't remember reading this in the article, but there's a state law requiring all public funds to be deposited within three days of receipt. For the State Auditor's Office, this is a big deal for schools because of risk of theft and lapping and every school administrator in the state should be very aware of that rule. Without knowing the specifics, I have no idea why this is a big deal in this case because, truthfully, in my experience this used to happen a lot over the summer a decade ago. Nevertheless, I've never encountered a high school that isn't open most of the summer.
Educational Equity: one call to the Office of Civil Rights in Denver, and Provo is in deep **** over that weight room. Which may be why the old superintendent resigned. There's a reason most of the school districts in the state large enough to have more than one high school have an educational equity department.
The Weber School District Foundation fraud: this pissed the legislature off enough that they were very adamant that fundraised funds are public funds and each school district's business administrator is responsible for internal controls and making sure district policies are applied to those funds as well. (It seems like every state is different in its approach to booster clubs so this probably seems strange to people from Texas particularly.) Consequently, if a school won't reimburse an art teacher for car repairs, it's not going to look good if they have a different policy for the football coach.
Personally, educational equity is a public policy approach I support so I don't feel bad that Provo parents might call and complain so something changes. Wong's claims that he offered to fundraise for the full district sound a little hollow because effective fundraisers typically get jobs so I don't think trial-by-media is getting full information here. I also completely agree with the comments that the old principal sounds ineffective in enforcing financial policy--whether he agrees with the policy or not, it's his job.
I know someone who works with one of the investigating entities mentioned in the article so I might make a phone call to see if things are really as bad as they are made out to be. Teachers keep their jobs for worse things so this feels more like there's far more to this story than Wong has chosen to let out to the press--just like another football coach in the state who took a job out of the country.

PROVO — About 100 students at Timpview High School in Provo walked out of class Monday morning to protest the suspension of the school's football coach.

Since HS teachers are state employees, you can look up their salaries online. Last time I checked, Wong made around $90K per year, which puts him at the very top end of HS teachers in the state.Originally posted by RC Vikings View PostWhat can a high school coach like Wong make? Can a school dist pay more for a coach than others teachers and how much can they pull down with their summer camps?
I am not sure how they fund that kind of a differential. I wonder if donor money can help pay it."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

This site has Wong listed at 83K, and it has Bingham's Dave Peck at 110K. Peck's is listed as "Total/Gross Compensation" while Wong's is "Annual Rate".Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostSince HS teachers are state employees, you can look up their salaries online.
