People used to freak out because LaVell would state BYU's primary goal was to win the lowly WAC every year and never mentioned national title aspirations.

So now BYU is an independent, so what should their goals be now? To be better than the other 3 Indy teams? That's not particularly lofty. If not that, then what?

Wait, so you're arguing that we as fans should lower our expectations but it's ok that the coach is openly suggesting that this is the goal? I don't get it.

I'm suggesting that Bronco is screwed no matter which goal he publicly sets. People seem thoroughly unimpressed with consistent 10 win seasons and finishing between 15th and 25th nationally.

          I agree. He's in a tight spot.

I was and am completely unimpressed with the 9 wins BYU had this season.

So we're back to Bronco having to throw out national titles as a goal, knowing full well the combination of who BYU is and what their access is and will be precludes that from ever happening again. Drop that goal down a notch and you have even more people gunning for Bronco because he's "satisfied with mediocrity", even if BYU's success has been better than 80% of the nation.

That answer still doesn't speak to the disconnect between that stated goal and the fan's expectation being excessive. You don't set goals that you don't expect to achieve, right? Are you suggesting Coach M thinks that the goal is unattainable but based upon independence he has no other goal to set?

Nope. I don't need a national championship. Beating a good team once in a while, a team that ends the season as a top 30 team. That would be nice.

You should be happy about that part at least. We are in the top 30 in most polls.

I was referring to the hypothetical team that we beat ending up in the top 30.

Not sure that's what he meant, unless you're referencing the fact that BYU doesn't lose to other teams; BYU only beats itself.

                          Oops. Gotcha.

Well, we beat ourselves in the Utah game with all those turnovers, so there you go.

EDIT: Dang it. I'm a hack.

How often? By my basic memory, BYU does that about as often under Mendenhall as it always did. It seems to me he has won about 33 percent of those match ups.

who was the last team Mendenhall beat that ended the season in the top 30?
