Back when Crowton was fired and they were looking for a new coach, the BYU board of trustees asked each candidate a question. "If you were coaching our team in preparation for a bowl game, how many practices would you use without going over the allotted limit?"Originally posted by jay santos View PostI'm not leading a lynch mob or anything on this, I just don't get it. Programs across the country are constantly investigated for practicing too much. Here, we don't use the practice we have available.
When asked the question, Lance Reynolds responded: "I would use almost all of the allotted practices, and maybe give the players a couple days rest somewhere in there."
When asked the question, Kyle Whittingham responded: "I would use every last minute of every last practice to get ready for not only our bowl game, but for next season as well."
When asked the question, Bronco Mendenhall responded: "I would use as few practices as possible, so as not to risk an investigation for a practice violation by the NCAA."

Where did Bronco get the rep for talking too much? I've never seen a guy that bolts from the podium faster than he does.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostYet we're all subjected to his ramblings whenever a microphone is stuck in his face. My understanding is that Bronco has a rule that all coaches need to be home by 6pm during the season. Is there any truth to that? If so, has that always been his policy or has it been a recent development since he got all righteous on us? Also, how has his bowl preparation been in the past? Has he always used the least possible preparation time? I ask this because I get the impression something terrible has happened to Bronco and his competitive drive. His actions as of late are corresponding to his speeches about Football coming fifth and Cougar Club members being pharisees. Of course I wouldn't care about anything he says if his product matched what he was hyping about before the season.
With the way Bronco is running things I don't see how this team can progress beyond where they are now, so I guess this comes down to what fans want out of the program. Do we want to see this team as a national contender or are we content with 9-10 win seasons with terrible schedules each year? The Bronco apologists must consider this a successful season because with his current approach we won't see much better IMO.What I win, I keep. What you win, I keep.

You people are going to force me back into the Bronco apologist camp. Nobody knows what really goes on in what Bronco emphasizes or doesn't emphasize. I could care less what priority Bronco places on football or what rhetoric he throws out there about the subject. I could care less how frequently or energetically his team practices. I can forgive him for disliking BYU fans as his job probably forces him into the sad predicament of having to interact with many. What matters is the stagnation in the program the past 3-4 years on the field. Period. I would still be bothered about that stagnation even if Bronco massaged Jay Santos' inner thigh at Cougar Club shindigs and broke every NCAA practice time regulation like Rick Majerus. For the record I think Mendenhall works as hard and cares as much as any other head coach. I don't buy the 5th priority nor that he fails to practice as much as he can.Originally posted by mr_thekid View PostMy understanding is that Bronco has a rule that all coaches need to be home by 6pm during the season. Further, I am not convinced what is holding BYU at its precipice is just Bronco Mendenhall. It might just be that this is exactly where/what BYU wants to be. My instinct is Mendenhall is not real happy with the stagnation of the past few years but he just might not have what it takes to get BYU over the hump and perhaps nobody else does either as it might just be an insurmountable hump.
To be honest I lean to thinking Mendenhall is about pegging BYU's potential. I think many fans also recognize that and Medenhall becomes a lightning rod because perhaps we don't want to face that reality. Only if he practiced a bit more...only if BYU fans didn't annoy him...only if.....Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

That is the long version of what I have been saying. What annoys me are the fans who insist the 10 win seasons as great. Well, it is OK if for them it is great, but don't go out there chastising the people who realize it is only great if the competition is good to really good and we consistenty lose or break even against good to very good competition. That kind of rhetoric only clouds the actual fact that the program has stagnated and may not become elite. Once we all accept that under the present circumstances that is fact, we might all complain a bit less.

I don't need my thigh massaged. I can't stand Bronco for the person he is. I really can't think of anyone that drives me more batty than his public persona (which may or may not even be who he is or what he believes). But I think he's a good coach and I support him. I wouldn't want him to leave and wouldn't dream of firing him. So clearly, if I think he's an ass but support him as a coach, I'm OK with a lot of the stupid stuff he does and says.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostYou people are going to force me back into the Bronco apologist camp. But I think you and I both know that solid execution on fall Saturday afternoons is preceded by a ton of practice and hard work. I saw some pretty undisciplined and poorly prepared play this fall. OL's jumping offsides, missed blocking assignments, players not knowing the plays or the formations from time to time.
Like I said, I'm not going to lynch him for this, but it's a puzzler when in an environment where competing programs are practicing every available minute and most likely pushing the edge of NCAA rules, that we would only use about 1/3 of the total allotted practice time for the bowl.

I agree, but I have heard from Bronco's mouth that a National Championship is within BYUs potential. That is where the rub is. I have no problem coming to grips with the reality that BYU will never be another Notre Dame/USC/Michigan etc. What bothers me is that we are spoon-fed these lines that seem to indicate that we are working toward greatness , but then don't do the work necessary to make that happen...allegedly.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View Post
