1.) Brandon Doman being much improved.
2.) Michael Alisa being much improved.
3.) Devin Mahina stepping up as a good D1 TE.
4.) Riley Nelson's marginally improved passing.

    You heard it here first!
Nelson has mastered the art of chucking up jumpballs that our 6'3" to 6'6" receivers, of which there be not a few, can come down with. As long as Nelson is content with that approach rather than starting to think he can thread stuff over the middle or trying to muscle a deep out, he will probably be effective enough.

I expect that Apo will step up and keep defenses honest and that Bronco can muster enough good voodoo to keep the injury bug away from him.

I would like to see Holt RS this year and move to DE or perhaps OL. But I have wanted that since his freshman year. I think Mahina is a more complete TE than Holt will be. If Alisa improves and with Riley's running ability and less than spectacular down the field arm, a good pass catching TE out there in the mid range ought to find a lot of space this year. I like Mahina as that guy and have since the end of his freshman year. He is likely the healthiest and I think he will grasp that role this year.

For BYU to win two of the 4 tough road games, Nelson needs to remember the better part of valor. He can go all apeshit against Utah State, Hawaii and everyone else but against the 4 good programs eat it and live to fight another day - unless the defense or special teams are stepping all over their dicks that game. I expect that with his experience he will be more conservative when needs be. A good receiving TE would go a long way to helping him there.

Mathews has had some moments that make me think he could play an Andrew George type role. A solid compliment to the other receivers.

With Holt saying the doctors told him his knee will never be back to 100%, I'm not sure we'll see much of anything out of him. The other TEs haven't proven to be anything special yet, but Holt was already limited in the passing because of his lack of speed before the injury. Now that Friel has shown he can be a competent blocker, it seems like it'll be tough for Holt to carve out a spot.

You can ask Hoffman to go boxout and get flyballs against the majority of the programs on our schedule, but like you said, against the better teams, that shit just ain't going to fly (see Tulsa and TCU). Riley played fine enough last year, but he didn't seem to be able to adjust this mentality he has based on opponent, and as the season wore on, I definitely didn't see the improvement I hoped to see in that regard. I would like to be more optimistic about some potential improvement here, but given remarks that both he and his coach have made this offseason, I'm less than optimistic about seeing significant strides here. It's one of the things that makes the position a question mark for me.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

                • Players who will share the same number:

1- Ross Apo and Joe Sampson
2- Cody Hoffman and Spencer Hadley
                  3- James Lark and KVN
5- Alani Fua and Iona Pritchard
7- Preston Hadley and Alex Kuresa
10- Mitch Mathews and Zac Stout
11- Terren Houk and Jason Munns
12- JD Falslev and Taysom Hill (would this mean they can't play together?)
15- O'Neil Chambers and Ammon Olson
21- DeQuan Everett and Kurt Henderson
22- Adam Hine and Manoa Pikula
24- Cameron Corner and John Lamont
26- Robbie Buckner and Colby Hanson
27- David Foote and Teu Kautai
28- Sawyer Powell and Levi Teo
29- Skye Povey and Skyler Ridley
32- Nate Carter and Mike Hague
35- Sean Dyhre and Zed Mendenhall
37- Riley Bushman and Justin Sorenson
56- Famika Anae and Connell Hess
93- Trevor Brown and Simote Vea

Interesting note. There are no players who chose the number 81. That's a solid number.

Depends on how they use him. It isn't necessary for a tight end to have blazing speed.

He already didn't have blazing speed. Sure, he was a good blocker, but Friel is a good blocker that can also get open and do something after he catches the ball.

I had hopes of Holt being the best all-around TE, but that knee injury was just too significant. Maybe we see him in jumbo sets, but I'm not sure we see him do much else.

How are you guys getting your info? Doman has mentioned him by name as someone who will be expected to contribute. A blown ACL doesn't necessarily wreck a career, especially the career of a tight end. I've been watching Holt for years, he has the goods if he's able to get back from the mental aspect of his injury.

                        • It was amazing last year to have a position as deep as TE and lose all of that depth by the end of the season. We lost 4 TEs to injury for the entire season (Jorgensen, Holt, Mahina and Wilson). Simply incredible.

Are we sure it was only an ACL?

The worst of it was an ACL.

                              • I am not as worried as some on here. I have full faith that we will be appreciably better this year sans the cluster that was last year's Heapsgate. The first four games of last season, our O line looked about as lost as our QB. I think we are plenty good enough to move the ball, this year with the added bonus of Tight Ends, a healthy RB corps, and fall camp reps for our starting QB.
