I expect that Apo will step up and keep defenses honest and that Bronco can muster enough good voodoo to keep the injury bug away from him.
I have little hope for Apo to be anything other than average. In traffic, he can't seem to stay composed, and he looks awkward if the ball isn't thrown right at him (and honestly, with Nelson, that's a good percentage of the time downfield).

Disclosure: I hope Ross Apo turns out to be a beast.

Some of you have very selective memories.

Nelson threw some jump balls sure but his accuracy has improved. He made several medium range passes last season that hit his receiver in stride. I expect further improvement this season.

No, I remember Nelson being fairly accurate at times in the mid range passes (there were also some pretty ugly ducks, but whatever). Point is, Nelson isn't the guy who is going to place the football in your hands 20-plus yards down the field, and Apo didn't seem to be the guy who could make the mid-play adjustments to go and get the ball Austin-Collie/Johnny Harline style.

That's not a horribly difficult catch (recognizing fully I wouldn't have made it). This is D-1 football, not intramurals.

Posts with over/under coverage aren't difficult throws either. Still the play on the whole is a nice one with a fine layout by Hoffman.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I wouldn't kick that play out of bed for eating crackers.

                  Agreed.

My chief concern with Apo is his struggles with athleticism to go up and get the ball. He's tall, he's fast, he's athletic, but in jumpball situations (and with Riley there will probably be plenty of opportunities) or where the ball is thrown slightly behind him, He seems to struggle to get the ball...at least, that's what I recall in my mind's eye.

He was a redshirt freshman, seems a little early to pass judgment.

                      • Eason bringing the Johnson hype.

Eason expects Preston Hadley to hold down one cover spot on the boundary but predicts redshirt freshman Jordan Johnson will be one of the finest corners the Cougars have produced.

"I'm calling it right now. He is a very special player. He has talent and the skills to be one of the best. I've never been around a corner with as much athletic ability as he has. I felt he should have started at field corner last year and I should have been behind him, but that was a coaching decision."

I wonder if he'll get another shot to return kicks? He sure had a rough go last year.
