I suspect he isn't the fastest 17 year old in the nation, but I would assume he is still really fast.

At the bare minimum, Hine's 7'2" high jumping ability should be useful in goal line situations.
Williams had some buzz until he lost a lot of playing time last year to a teammate who is Boise State bound I believe. So, not sure what to make of that.

    • The jury is out on Hine. I can attest that he had the goods in high school. I have a hunch he's going to get his shot this season.

It seems to may like Williams should redshirt, but maybe Juice leaving that's less of a possibility.

Only thing I've read on Heenay is an article about the scout team last year.

“Adam Hine is a monster,” described Kuresa. “I don’t know what kind of mission he went on, but he brings it every week and he gives the starting defense all they can handle.”

Hine is certainly one of the more intriguing true freshmen on the team. He committed to BYU clear back in May of 2007 with quite the athletic pedigree, doing it all for Snow Canyon along with setting records in the high jump.

He came home just a couple of weeks before fall practices began, making it all but impossible to find a contributing spot on the offensive two-deep roster. His first couple of practices were a bit of a shock, but almost four months after returning home from his service, he’s starting to regain his form.

“Adam is doing great,” said running backs coach Joe DuPaix about the 6-foot-1, 193 running back. “He has a smile on his face all the time and that is one thing I love about him is his attitude. His progression has been huge since that first week. He looked stiff and even awkward when he first got home, but his vision and his agility and his natural instincts as a runner are coming back. And it’s exciting to see as a coach because he’s someone who can really help us in the coming years.”

        • Hine was not helped by some HS coach throwing out a Reggie Bush comparison while he was in high school. Fans latched onto that quote and ran with it. I'm not sure what to expect from Hine in 2012, but I still am pretty optimistic about his BYU career as a whole.

The opinion is that the most physically gifted runningbacks on the team in spring were Lasike and Hine. Lasike is likely not going to contribute in any form until at least next year and more likely never, but if he can grasp the game mentally he is a really good athlete. He is compact, powerful and still has decent speed. I think Hine will be a more athletic form of Curtis Brown. The hope is he will be able to do everything pretty well while being a step faster than Curtis. I think if Alisa can stay healthy this transfer should be a real good thing for Hine's development. He will be forced to get some meaningful reps this year and he should be ready for that it being his second year in the program at RB, but if Alisa stays healthy Hine will never be asked to shoulder the load. He will be involved without being thrown into the fire and by next year he should be ready to take over if either he is the better back or if Alisa gets injured. My guess about Williams is he will redshirt this year barring an injury to Alisa within the first 6 weeks of the season. He doesn't have that much experience and is still a year younger than his class. He could use the physical development of a redshirt year. Personally, I thought he would be moved to OLB, or at least that is what I hoped would happen, but given Juice's transfer he is likely to stay at RB. But unless Alisa gets injured I just don't think Jamaal will see enough reps to justify wasting the RS year. On the other hand if he is involved sooner he is less likely to transfer due to homesickness/being uncomfortable in a very different environment.

It is great, but also the more we talk the more I get worried about this season. Not worried in the sense we'll flop, just worried in the sense that we aren't going to be up to much. I look around the offensive side of the ball and outside of the receivers all I see are question marks. I don't really feel confident about the O-line, RB's, TE's or QB at this point. The defense I feel pretty good about.

If our defense can be equal to or better than last year's, we won't need to worry about our offense for more than a couple of games. We probably won't be explosive, but we should be solid enough to score enough points against the tougher teams if our defense holds up.

P.S. Don't take this post as predicting a 12-1 kind of season.

That's the phonetic pronunciation of his last name? I've never heard is spoken, and I don't want to bust out an "Adam HIYN" reference in front of my TBS-subscribing buddies this season.

There are too many softies on our schedule to be a total flop. At a minimum we'll play a bowl game. But I do think losing all of the four big games is a realistic possibility, and maybe some would consider 8-4 a flop. I don't think 8-4 is a flop season, but maybe depending on where some thought we'd be this season it would be a flop.

I can see that. I've stopped worrying about our O-lines. They're like carbon copies of each other. If the rumors are true and they're more athletic this year, then that's just gravy.

Agree on TEs and RBs though. Alisa didn't blow me away last year, but I hope he tears it up (maybe I'm misremembering, but he seemed to run a little upright).

I'd put CBs as a concern of mine, but what else is new??

Last year's team would go 8-4 with this schedule, IMO. I think this year's team will go 10-2. The big surprises on offense will be:

1.) Brandon Doman being much improved.
2.) Michael Alisa being much improved.
3.) Devin Mahina stepping up as a good D1 TE.
4.) Riley Nelson's marginally improved passing.

                            You heard it here first!

I think Holt will also buttress the TE position.

Hopefully the approaching season will also herald the return of Junky and Hot Lunch.

If those two losers show up again, I will consider this season an outright success regardless of record!
