Seriously. That might be the worst offensive philosophy ever.

"Guys just try to get open. Break."

On a serious note I was really hoping that we weren't headed down this path but comments by both Bronco and Doman seemed to suggest we were. I think this is a significant mistake. We're an offense without an identity right now and the future remains just as uncertain. If Mangum is going to be expected to run designed draws and read options why should he stay committed to BYU? That sounds like a disaster.

I'm right there with you. I figure by the time Mangum sees the field, Doman will have either figured it out or be gone as OC. I agree with Surfah that there is no offensive identity. Didn't Doman say last year that he was trying to do what Boise was doing? I don't think he has figured out what the hell he is doing.

Prior to the season he said he wanted to do what the BYU of old did. That never transpired.

Time will tell but the decision to move Anae out and replace him with Doman may prove to be even more foolish than the Crowton hire. Right now it looks like all of my preconceived notions about this decision are coming true. This is NOT good.

          • Yes, lets change our whole offensive philosophy that has worked for the past 30 years that continues to work for teams like Boise state simply because we didnt get a OC who can call a good game for a drop back passer!

Is a qb with running capability mutually exclusive of a drop back passer?

I think the intent is an offense similar to what BYU has run most of the last 40 years with an added component of a qb who can create with his legs. I doubt BYU moves to an option type of offense but is looking for a qb who can run some designed qb draws and create when things break down.

I hope they instruct our dual-threat QBs how to slide then.

I think that is like a way bit defeatist. I am convinced Doman will be a good OC. I was also convinced that there were going to be growing pains and that Anae was already a good OC. I don't think I would qualify the change as stupid or smart as much as I thought it was just unneccesary, at least from a coordinator perspective.

Some will some won't. That isn't going to keep me awake at night.

                    • I was hoping that some of teams that constitute the big four on our schedule next year would be a bit down, but I was looking at SI's preseason rankings the other day and they had ND, Boise and Ga Tech all in the top 25. Yikes. Though I will say they didn't have much to support their Boise ranking other than reputation. I still think we get that one.

I noticed that as well. For the past couple of weeks I have fantasized about BYU picking up a couple of games from the Big-12 and their scheduling fiasco. Yesterday I wondered about the possibility of picking up Florida State after WVU dropped their game. But I know it won't happen and BYU will be lucky to go .500 against the big four games as it is.

And they are all away games. It would be nice if at least one of them was at LES.

                          • Notre dame is in the top 25 every preseason, there is no reason to think that they will be any different next year than they are every other season.

Ga Tech....this is mostly the same team that lost to Utah in the bowl game, no?

I'm not saying we win all those games but I'm not going into next season considering them to be unwinnable, especially by virtue of the preseason ranking.

                            • When is that Georgia Tech game next year? I was browsing the Georgia Tech schedule on FBSchedules and didn't see any date between the two.

Unfortunately, we will be mostly be the same team that played in the Armed Forces Bowl.
