2011 bowl games open thread

I argued in this post that Oklahoma State was more deserving than Alabama.

And why is it a hollow argument pointing out the fact that Alabama wasn't good enough to win its division?

I don't like the idea of a +1, because it still doesn't solve the problem that the BCS model excludes far too many teams from getting a shot at winning a true championship. All conference champions + 5 at-large bids. Seed those teams based on a power ranking.

And for the argument about what to do with the bowl games, the teams that don't get into the playoffs can play in the bowl games. This makes more sense (to me) and gives us a true champion.

I'm sorry but if the Sun Belt/WAC/MWC/CUSA wants in they should earn it with an at large bid, I can't think of anything more ridiculous than a Sun Belt team taking a spot as an autobid in a 16 team playoff. 8 team playoff determined by the BCS rankings is a much more attractive, viewer friendly, fair system overall.

I agree I can't believe some people seem against an idea of playoff for college football when every other sport that matters has figured out it is the best way.

Even every other level of college football has a playoff. Division I just doesn't seem to get it.

Why should those teams be excluded based solely on conference affiliation? Would you prefer that as well in basketball?

If one of the big boys get left out of a football playoff, they only have themselves to blame by not winning their conference.

12 team. Every conference champion in the top 25 gets an auto bid. #1 through #4 get a first week bye. It's fair, it retains the importance of the regular season, and unless there are upsets, it's just two extra games for all but the championship game.

This scenario seems to undermine your complaint. If you are ok with at large seedlings, then you are ok with winning a title without winning your division. What's the difference?

By dominating LSU last night, Bama proved they deserved to be there as well and showed they truly are the best team in the country. The BCS couldn't have played out any better. Or should an OK St team that lost to Iowa St have played in the National championship game? Now that would have made a mockery of college football.
