You haven't paid attention to LSU's schedule this year have you?
(I'm not a BCS fan, btw.)
they went to Morgantown (800 miles away) and played Oregon in Dallas (400 miles away). Their other OOC games were Northwestern St and Western KY They didn't travel that far. Of course Michigan didn't leave the state of Michigan for a game until late october. Penn st did the same thing. Ohio st did play in Miami. All the big programs in the SEC, B1G and big12 do what LSU does.

Is their schedule this year an anomaly?

Except for Florida. They never leave the state, ever.
Measuring by miles is silly, btw. Miles in the east are not the same thing as miles in the west. LSU went to WVU, killed 'em. Dallas admittedly was less neutral than you'd hope, but they beat Oregon there too.
Revenues from home games being what they are, this ain't changing any time soon. Plus nobody should go to boise until that damnably awful field is changed to a human color.

I hate the blue field, but if an SEC team had any balls, it would go to Boise to play.

In the last ten years LSU's played UNC in Atlanta; at Washington; at ASU; at Arizona; and at VaTech. They've got a home-and-home scheduled with TCU in the future.
For a BCS title contender to schedule Oregon and WVa away from home is extremely admirable.

This is a really ridiculous year to criticize LSU for its schedule.
It's not a ridiculous year to not feel bad for LSU.

If Boise had any money, the SEC team would go there to play.
Look, props for Boise and their anywhere, anytime attitude, but if you think scheduling decisions are made on the basis of testicular fortitude you are completely naive. It's about money, and until that changes (if it ever does) nobody has any incentive to go to Boise ever unless they are charitably minded. Which nobody is. So beat that particular drum all you want.

I'd actually like to do a scheduling analysis to see which teams really are stay-at-home types. Florida we know about. Seems to me that Bama is like LSU (the Penn State series jumps to mind). I know Tennessee has made a number of trips to SoCal in the past few years, not that the Vols have been good lately.

I realize that money has pretty much everything to do with scheduling, but it doesn't mean that a team like LSU isn't too big of a pussy to go to Boise. I'd wager that with a green field and a lot of money for the opposing team, the SEC teams wouldn't go to Boise because it would risk their standing in the elite class they claim to be.

Not only gate revenues, but bowl revenue. Average/bad teams in BCS conferences schedule as many easy, home OOC games as possible because that extra game is so vital.
It's why I can't really fault Chris Hill for saying Utah's OOC scheduling philosophy will include two home games and (most likely) an in-state road game against USU or BYU.
