No, and that's why it makes me sad

The money, which I initially thought was a lot (it would be for BYU ), is not an issue.

The lost scholarships will hurt, but not that much since I'm sure there are many kids that would play at PSU without a scholarship.

The bowl ban and ability to transfer might be the thing that hurts the most given that kids want to play in bowls and PSU will likely lose quite a few underclassmen. But the fact this (bowl ban) is the worst part of the punishment makes me sad

Didn't SC sign some 30+ players the year before the penalties were imposed?

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

        • Disgusting. Very sad day for college football and sports in general.

              • So Emmett wants to install the notion that football is not too big to fail, but then can't pull penn state football for a couple years because, well, it's too big to fail.

                • PSU students/alumni/fans are all over twitter taking it to people that think the sanctions aren't enough. They are crazy.

A real student body would find a way to make a correct statement, like not showing up to any home games this year. I'd love to see an empty student section at every PSU home game in 2012. Sadly, I doubt there will be a lack of demand for tickets.

Does anyone know if PSU plays Standford any time soon? I'd love to see what the Stanford band can cook up for their half time performance.

Yes, but dont think PSU will be able to do quite the same. SC rarely signs their full class, so going into penalties, they had a bunch of unused scholarships to burn. Several of them were early enrollees that counted towards the PRIOR class, then they used some for the current class. It was a really smart move and obviously wound up helping the team.

The thing I have observed about sanctioning scholarships for these mega programs like SC or Penn State...you make them a rare commodity that subsequently ups the value. Look at what SC is doing right now across the country...they are signing anyone they want because the kids know that once the slot is gone, it really is gone. Penn state will see the same. Regional pride and a love for the program will galvanize recruits.

One small difference is the length of the bowl ban, but mot by much. SC recruited kids and told them something very brilliant. When parents of potential recruits asked the coaches about the bowl bans, the coaches infamously responded, "it means that your son will play in 50 games instead of 52 games." a great response. Penn state will have one class, and only one class, that will never play in a bowl game for 4 years. Everyone else gets to play in at least one bowl game. So that isn't a huge deal. Also, as pointed out, these are losses of scholarships, not roster spots. How many kids at PSU will simply pay their tuition and play? It costs 30k a year to attend SC. How much does it costs to go to a state school in pennsylvania?

                    • Take that PSU! I bet PSU really wishes it had the death penalty now...

I have a pit in my stomach, this is a joke and it's disgusting.

That's an interesting and smart approach. It seems to me though that the advantage SC had in their case was that they were still the class of their conference. Oregon had been on the rise, as had Stanford, but still USC was head and shoulders above the rest of the conference/western half of the U.S. really. With Penn St, you at least have programs that have a ton of cache that will be going after these players, and now you've given them all the ammo they need to keep players away from Penn St. That's not to say they still won't sign studs, but I do think this has an impact. What incentive does a player have to pick Penn St. right now over Ohio St, Michigan or Wisconsin? Arguably, none.

I'm interested to see how many of the underclassmen decide to transfer. I think you'll see quite a few move.

                        • B1G to announce their own actions against PSU at 10am today (CDT). If they are really the academic powerhouse and progressive group that SU says they are, they will do the right thing and kick PSU out of the conference.....right?

Lol. The B1G has two of their premier programs on bowl bans with vacated wins.
