This is not bad. Considering the reputational blow and now this, as a practical matter Penn State football is dead. Who won't transfer? Only freaky G. Gordon Liddy types. In some ways this hurts worse than a death penalty, because they will have their footbal revenue decimated, and they have to reach back and write a check for $60 million. They have no insurance to pay for this almost certainly, and it could be a tough sell raising money for it. Their future in the Big Ten is not that secure. They had to come a long ways to Big Ten status in the first place.

The NCAA has already said that the penalty can be paid out of ANY source, save it does not reduce scholarships of money for other athletic programs. Are you joking? $60MM....Penn State can pay that this afternoon.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostThis is not bad. Also, Beaver tails will not be sold in the stadium for the next 4 years.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostWow, NCAA really piling on now
Other penalties that were considered by the NCAA but deemed too extreme:
Penn State required to discount all NCAA approved gear (sweatshirts, polos, hats, etc) by 5% if sold at PSU bookstore. (under Armour only, does not include Nike)
Penn State fans traveling to away games limited to either the traditional comfortable athletic shoes/calf high white socks combo OR fanny pack with thigh high khaki shorts. Not both.
White clothing insude Beaver Stadium limited to 20% of capacity. The other 80% of fans in attendance must wear blue.
Penn State required to immediately tear down Lasch Building and begin construction on new, improved, modern, state of the art facilities.
Fans at future football games bringing signs and banners in support of Joe Paterno will be limited to 5' x 3'.
"Joe Paterno" statue must remain in storage indefinitely. However, Penn State may, at its OWN expense, erect a "JoePa" statue, a "Coach Paterno" statue, or a "JVP" statue, in remembrance of Sandusky's victims.
Tailgaiting will not be allowed to start until the Friday before gameday and campers/trailers must be off the university within 8 hours after the end of the game."You interns are like swallows. You shit all over my patients for six weeks and then fly off."
"Don't be sorry, it's not your fault. It's my fault for overestimating your competence."

$60mm is nothing. That will scarcely make a dent for them, especially with as deluded as their fan base/alumni network appears to be.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostThe NCAA has already said that the penalty can be paid out of ANY source, save it does not reduce scholarships of money for other athletic programs. The money will be paid out in 5 installments of $12 Million."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Trying to see both sides of the coin here.Originally posted by nikuman View Post$60mm is nothing. That will scarcely make a dent for them, especially with as deluded as their fan base/alumni network appears to be.
Anyway, consider this about Penn State's punishment vs. what SMU received. (or SMU's recovery period vs. what Penn State will face). Per the Collegiate Licensing Company, SMU's living alumni count today is about 70,000. Penn State's is 460,000.
Unlike SMU, there has been no public censure or disassociation of top boosters at Penn State.
Deluded is one thing, but PSU's alumni base is a behemoth. How many are really that emotionally invested in the football program?

Greg Webb, a four-star defensive tackle from New Jersey, announced last week that he had rescinded his verbal commitment to Penn State and instead verbally committed to the University of North Carolina of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Today, Ross Douglas, a four-star cornerback from Avon, Ohio, announced that he, too, has decommited from Penn State. He told Rivals.com that he's considering Nebraska, Michigan and Michigan State, among others.
Virginia Tech is recruiting at least three players in Virginia that have also considered playing for Penn State: running back Derrick Green, defensive lineman Wyatt Teller, and linebacker Oren Burke.
The recruiting war for Penn State's players has already begun.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

It reflects the fact that overall football is not that important, as I've been preaching. $60 million is the annual football revenue. But the university has a billion dollar annual budget no doubt. They raised $232 million in donations last year no doubt mostly for academic programs. $1.8 billion endowment.Originally posted by nikuman View Post$60mm is nothing. I think the punishment is proporational to football's importance and surgically aimed at football. Unless the current administrators are as corrupt as the last, this will not come out of academic programs. $60 million is crippling to football. Then the shame of 14 years of forfeited wins and the continued stain on their reputation by their having received a punishment instead of meted it out on themselves. The mass transfers that sould ensue.
This is more like indefinite horrific torture than death. I'm fine with it.

What's the over/under on SU deciding he was wrong and the punishment wasn't severe enough? You guys also need to bear in mind that the individuals allegedly and convicted of commiting crimes are facing criminal charges or imprisoned. The NCAA acted within its sphere in a harsh, responsible way. PSU will of course lose a lot more than $60 million, insofar as the financial repurcussions, including the Big Ten's cancellation of their postseason money. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
