the battles with kids over sleepovers are tough ones. My wife and I have said no about 99% of the time, and those are not fun battles. Our exceptions have been with family members and with friends that we have known the parents and the kids very well. It's still a risk though.
We have found that a better option is for them to have late nights in place of a sleep over. Besides, the fun of sleepovers ends when they eventually go to sleep. If they want to have their friends over till late, that's a better option in my opinion. But nothing's perfect.
My wife told me that once she was staying overnight with a friend when she was a teenager, and her female friend tried to take advantage of her. It's not just the adults that you need to be wary of.

The battle is easier if you just never allow it. Our kids know it isn't an option so they aren't very upset when we say no (because they do still ask occasionally).Originally posted by Scorcho View Postthe battles with kids over sleepovers are tough ones. Penn State is the primary state university in Pennsylvania. It has the full faith and credit of Pennsylvania behind it; it is a public agency. It also has hundreds of millions of dollars in liability insurance.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThe civil suits alone will bankrupt the school. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

All you who think Mike Leach, Bobby Knight, and yes, I guess even Rick Majerus, got screwed, here is some perspective for all of us. Here is what happens when the coach becomes bigger than the school, when even the president won't stand up to him.
Why else would Paterno's "superiors" not have reported this to the police than to protect the football program's reputation? Well, they tried to save the football program's reputation, and they damaged the university's overall reputation. This is why administrators and faculty detest coaches who become centers of enormous power at the university and think that they are the university's brand. They are not. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

OK. Bankrupt was hyperbole. Note that insurance often does not cover gross negligence or willful misconduct various grounds. There's an argument to be made that one or the other standards apply.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostOK. Bankrupt was hyperbole. PSU won't go belly up but I am having a hard time thinking of anything worse for the university as a whole than knowingly allowing a pedophile to operate in your midst.Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Most liability insurance does not pay for punitives...there is still a ton of financial risk to the university with regard to future litigation. Not to mention the financial impact that will linger the longer this stays in the press.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostOK. Bankrupt was hyperbole. In CA Liability insurance is not allowed to indemnify for punitive damages or for child molestation. in fact, for the latter, they don't even have a duty to defend. However, the university would also be alleged to be negligent on a variety of grounds and so a defense would almost certainly be provided. I would expect their primary coverage to be subject to a large SIR, however, so no matter how you slice it, the taxpayers of Penn are going to be out some coin as a result of Sandusky.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostMost liability insurance does not pay for punitives...there is still a ton of financial risk to the university with regard to future litigation. Why are you comparing what is happening at PSU to whatever misdeeds happened at Utah? Very offensive. It doesn't justify anything Majerus did, no matter how hard you might try.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostAll you who think Mike Leach, Bobby Knight, and yes, I guess even Rick Majerus, got screwed, here is some perspective for all of us. I know you are referring to Penn the state but you remind me of a conversation with a coworker. He is a graduate of Penn, and they are very sensitive about being confused with Penn State, ivy that they are. So they have for years had a shirt at their bookstore that reads "Not Penn State" on the front.Originally posted by creekster View PostIn CA Liability insurance is not allowed to indemnify for punitive damages or for child molestation. in fact, for the latter, they don't even have a duty to defend.
