    • I found Wrubell's breakdown of Riley's drives interesting. IIRC, Riley has had 11 drives, and the shortest one went for 28 yards (but lasted 11 plays) and a FG. Even with his turnover issues, that's pretty good.

I don't know what to think anymore. It could be that Doman's offense is designed to work against defenses that have to respect the QBs legs, since that's what Doman dealt with as a player. It could be that our WRs run bad routes, but are athletic enough to get open once the play has been going long enough that they can adjust their routes, or it could be that Heaps really is as terrible as he looks.

I'll just watch the rest of the season without much in the way of expectation. Neither of these guys will get the team very far.

I think it is what it really looks like. Heaps is struggling to run things correctly. I am not sure any of us know why but for some reasons he is innacurate and not getting the team to move the ball. Nelson comes in and the team is moving the ball better. If Heaps were to play to his potential then I think the offense would be fine and likely better than what Nelson has shown. There would still be issues due to the lack of a really credible rushing threat, but other than that the pieces are clearly there and up to the task.

I don't think it is complex why Nelson is moving the ball better. I think it boils down to 2 things: He is actually throwing the ball better and is currently, at least in the games, a better passer than Heaps and second he is a credible rushing threat.

Even Bronco said part of the reason why BYU has been moving the ball with Nelson is that the WRs can adjust their routes when Riley scrambles, you can read into that in multiple ways, clearly a lot of top offenses don't have to rely on this often but with how our team is executing we might have to rely on this more backyard football style that will work against the bad teams we play most of the remaining season.

Texas found out in a hurry what happens to their gritty, scrambling gamer QB with a weak arm(Case McCoy) when you run into a good defense like OU, you need to be able to throw the ball to all parts of the field to keep them honest.

So you think they would have been better off sticking with Gilbert?

Yep. I bet the coaches would love it if we had a decent QB with a strong arm on the team.

Jeff, negotiating with Hsaru is like arguing with a junkie in need of a fix, only worse. Let it go.

Texas most likely invested too much into Gilbert before they realized it was a lost cause.

Almost noone had faith in Gilbert coming in to this year, Heaps was being raised as the next great BYU QB by the coaches foremost and the fans also. He was performing very well in practice unlike Gilbert who struggled mightily in the spring game and most of fall camp. These are not apples to apples comparisons by any stretch of the imagination. Gilbert also had a lot of talent around him and an OC with real experience running a great offense at Boise St, it was a much more open and shut case on Gilbert being the primary reason for Texas' struggles.

I really thought you were smarter than this. He is throwing the ball better and a better passer than heaps? Please don't tell me you are using sjsu and the hail mary/ricochet incidents to say he is throwing the ball better. If you please go watch that last game again you will find that doman dumbed down the playbook. Nelson threw spot passes all day long. You may have been able to make them even with a 5 foot 6 inch frame. This is really getting out of hand.

Doman really took the game out of the hands of the QB for the most part except for a few plays he asked Riley to make in the passing game and thats just in the 1st half. Doman completely took the ball out the QB's hands in the 2nd half.

He might be talking about the myriad of quick outs that Jake either threw in the dirt or airmailed into the bench. Or he may have been talking about a bunch of deep balls that were overthrown.

Right now Jake has one pass that he's hitting regularly. That pass is a medium range ball that can be thrown on a rope with all the velocity he can muster.

So Jake is lights out in practice. Doesn't change the fact that he can't throw a touch pass in games.

And Riley can? Has he been asked to throw anything difficult yet? The two deep post routes he was asked to throw (one to Apo against Utah State and the other to Matthews against SJSU) he threw behind the receiver one of which was picked.

He also has a pick on a deep ball because he did not have the arm strength to get it there.

Sorry but the gushing over Riley is getting ridiculous. I hope he is successful because that means BYU wins but lets be honest he is not a good college qb. He is a good football player but his QB skills are severly lacking. He had 3 redzone turnovers against SJSU one of the worst teams in college football. On top of that they did not score in the game after the 10 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. Lets not act like the kid was all world. Jake Heaps would have put up the same kind of numbers if not better against San Jose State and everyone here knows it.

CJ I'm not gushing. I'm just getting Hsaru's brother Ton Loc up to speed. No one thinks Riley is all-world. However I think he's getting a short shrift from those guys. With them no credit is ever given unless your name is Jake. Right now not a lot of credit should be going to the chosen one. Unfortunately for them the only way to give credit to Jake is to denigrate Riley constantly. Judging by the two players performances I think they are being unfair. Frankly judging by your comments to a post I made specifically about Jake I think you're being slightly unfair.

Nelson obviously has weaknesses but in spite of those he's playing the position better than Jake. Sure Riley has thrown two INT's but rarely are the five INT's Jake has thrown brought up. In six quarters of action Nelson has five TD's to Jake's three. Obviously he's thrown some bad balls. With that said he's thrown some very good balls. No one thought he could stretch a defense but he went over the top twice to Jacobson. One was perfectly thrown and caught for a TD. The other was slightly under thrown but still should have been caught. Even the under thrown ball was better than most of Jake's deep attempts.

When Riley did well against USU I didn't gloat about it. However I'm sick of all the one-sided BS that's been slung since then and I'm going to speak up.
