Was that a worst case scenario for our QB situation?

When we have these types of discussions, we have to deal with hypotheticals. I won't begrudge you for thinking Heaps would have come back in that game, but I won't agree with you either.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostSo in another post you say we can't deal with hypotheticals, but we KNOW that there is no way BYU overcomes a 1 touchdown deficit when Heaps went out even though they had 13 pts in the first half.
The fact is, Heaps lost to usu and Nelson beat them.I'm like LeBron James.

The problem is you take hypotheticals to the extreme. You're a Heaps guy, we get it. It's time for you to swallow some of the bitterness and try to enjoy BYU football until Heaps gets his shot. I doubt you're going to have to wait that long. Whining constantly about the situation ultimately gets annoying.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostSo in another post you say we can't deal with hypotheticals, but we KNOW that there is no way BYU overcomes a 1 touchdown deficit when Heaps went out even though they had 13 pts in the first half.

I don't think we would have come back, but you also won't entertain what could have happened against this terrible SJSU front 7 with Heaps in there, you can't have it both ways.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostWhen we have these types of discussions, we have to deal with hypotheticals. I would have had ZERO problem with Heaps being benched if the schedule wasn't set up how it is, but being that it is I saw that it could become a real problem.Originally posted by Shaka View PostThe problem is you take hypotheticals to the extreme. This is the reason I am so upset by it, because it could lead to a lot of divisiveness by the end of the year and the whole offseason. SJSU and ISU are opponents where it is hard to learn anything about your offense, but our performances against those teams can keep a QB in a starter spot that against even mid level teams he would likely lose.

Ultimately you have to hold a poor performing player accountable, even a quarterback. Jake had already lost the team to a point. What happened is not harmful to the team as they were already screwed up. Settle down and be patient.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostI would have had ZERO problem with Heaps being benched if the schedule wasn't set up how it is, but being that it is I saw that it could become a real problem.

I actually think most agree with you on this point. SJSU, Idaho, New Mexico State and Idaho State are not benchmark games. In fact, they will tell us pretty much nothing. We may get to see how far Riley can actually throw the ball with any sort of accuracy.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostI would have had ZERO problem with Heaps being benched if the schedule wasn't set up how it is, but being that it is I saw that it could become a real problem.

Oregon State, TCU, and Hawaii are the only barometer games left. if Nelson does poorly, Heaps will play. If Nelson does well, we will all be less concerned about Heaps not playing.
Neither are great, though. At least not right now.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

It wasn't working okay. We ended up with two FGs the entire second half. We went conservative because we didn't have a QB we felt could trust to throw the ball. Seethe INT to end the first half, INT to start the second half, and -50 passer rating Riley had in the 3rd quarter (61 rating the entire second half).Originally posted by Shaka View PostOur gameplan changed in the second half. A lot less passing and not nearly as many Riley rushes. Doman started going to the backs and it was working ok. This was brought up in the post-game interviews. With that said I really didn't enjoy that 3rd quarter.
It's a good thing we had a 20-point lead at half, because we almost let them back in the game.

When does Heaps come in? When we have a big halftime deficit against TCU? That sounds like a really good position to put him in.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI actually think most agree with you on this point. Pretty much. This season is garbage. This is what I have been saying all along. I am much more concerned about finding our QB for next year. I was fine with the benching. Jake has sat for almost a game and a half now. We know what Riley has. Give Jake these scrimmages to see if he has anything. If not, I hope Taysom Hill is the answer. He seems like a Doman QB.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI actually think most agree with you on this point. SJSU, Idaho, New Mexico State and Idaho State are not benchmark games. This is the nightmare scenario I see happening, we look decent enough against OSU to hang with them for most of the game(7-10 pt deficit) that they don't make a QB change(but we end up losing).Originally posted by Surfah View PostPretty much. Idaho St. next, team just dominates them physically, nothing to learn here. TCU punches us in the mouth and gets up big, Heaps gets potentially put in down by 20+ and asked to throw nearly every down against a defense who knows whats coming, if he doesn't wow anybody in this situation, we go back to Nelson for the next game.
Then we have NMSU and Idaho which are the same deal as ISU as far as learning anything or making QB judgments. Hawaii is the wild card, I don't know how that will work out.
And then we go into next year potentially with Nelson getting all the reps and having no reason to believe we have any chance to beat a single good team next year.

And to me, significantly better means at least two wins better. I don't think it matters for Idaho, Idaho State, New Mexico State, and BYU wins those games. I think TCU is going to be tough either way. That leaves Oregon State and Hawaii. I think Heaps of the last five games of last year gives us a better shot at winning those games than Riley does, and for me, I think that is why I'm frustrated because I think you need to use these other games to try and recapture that Heaps. Maybe that is the idea after Oregon State.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI'm talking about games left on the season. I can't say which exactly, but I think we're significantly better with Nelson.
I do believe that Riley makes the run game much better. I don't think anybody will debate that. But overall offensively? I'm not sure. When we pushed the tempo with Heaps previously we looked good then too.
