  • That was a incredibly dumb thing for Dick to write even if true.

Also if it is true what precipitated it? I've heard some interesting thing about Riley's parents, particularly his dad. Also Riley has a couple of pre-teen brothers. Maybe they were ones who popped off.

I know three people who are close friends with the Nelson's. By all accounts they are very solid people. If something went down then I'm thinking there's more to the story.

I'll say it: What do those 3 players have in common? They are not Nate Soleberg.

I'm thinking things may get a bit frosty for Dick down in Provo. I've always kind of enjoyed Harmon but I hope he gets called on the carpet.

        • I really respect and like coach Mendenhall, he's a great man. I've learned a lot about football from Coach Doman.
If that was deliberatly crafted this way, ouch. Doman single-handedly got Jake to BYU; at one point they have the best of relationships. That sure went south.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I don't think that is what is going on. I think it is having a qb who can create when things break down. I could be wrong, heaven knows I have been before, but I think we see very limited options but more designed qb draws and qbs running out of the pocket when things break down. More in the lines of how Steve Young played.

I agree with Mendenhall and Doman that it is a component that puts a great deal of pressure on opposing teams. It obviously leads to injuries to qbs as well but I think if BYU has an adequate rushing game we will see Riley running the ball in the 8-14 times per game rather than close to 20.

            • Rumor has it that there is way more to the Nelson family hazing that what Dick wrote. Apparently, he could have wrote a whole article on Nelson undercutting Jakes ability to lead, etc.

really, what rumor? I have three family members who are staff and former players (one current) in the last two years that would go right after your statement.

This fact, along with failing to hire a dedicated QB coach, cannot be overstated when discussing Heaps' career.

Doman is far better equipped to call plays for a running QB. Hopefully he can keep things going in the right direction with Nelson, at least until the world ends on December 21, 2012. Hopefully it happens AFTER the end of the Poinsettia bowl.

I think this is a really ugly period for BYU football, but I tend to believe that Jake had every opportunity to shut up his critics and detractors. He didn't do it and IMO these parting shots via Harmon indicate weakness on the part of Heaps and even more weakness on the part of Harmon.

It appears to me Jake missed the best thing a boy can have in life...an older brother. It also helps if one has 4 and comes from the family responsible for driving down property values in the neighborhood.

Given your track record, I feel very safe that this rumor is gospel truth then. Thanks for the endorsement.

Just wondering what your perspective is. You indicating that steady Bronco did a bit of a classical Crowton move of not having the patience a HC should have and biting off his nose to spite his face?
Yes, that is my thought on the matter. And no, I dont think you pull the QB vs USU. So he loses that game. big deal. then he goes into the easy part of the schedule and BYU finishes the regular season with 8 wins, not 9. And we have a kid that has grown up a bit more and still with us for 2 more years.

Look at Matt barkley at SC. Started as a true freshman, beats Ohio State at the Shoe. Throws a ton of interceptions his sophomore year. comes back fat and out of shape. Gets his act together for his junior year, poised for a Heisman run his Senior year. SC gets 4 really serviceable years out of him even though he threw a lot of picks and lost some games he could have won.

Bronco...what a moran. This is the guy that actually ran out a different QB every other series against Washington. That was his plan. Bronco has not known what to do with Heaps from the very first snap.
                        Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

                        • Wow, I'm surprised at the sackcloth and ashes around here. It's never as bad (or good) as people think. See: Ben Olson

Look, it didn't work out. It just didn't. Better to move on for both Jake and BYU. No QB controversy next year, and the staff get to groom an heir apparent in Hill.

If Jake was a winner, I'd be ticked. But he was a below average D1 QB, and it's time to move forward. I wish him the best, and respect him for persevering for two years in a tough situation. But I'll be cheering for Riley from here on out.

I too question Jakes toughness, but there is a good chance a lot of that rumor is true. Sorry.
