I'm not confident it did.

Heaps is more concerned with self preservation—speaking of his physical self and future, NFL potential self—than he is with doing what needs to be done in the here and now to win. Aside from the fact he is struggling to work through his progressions, he is also locked in on Apo in some weird pinky swear pact. I hate to say it but, he reminds me of Jim Everett.

Nelson is good enough to inspire a team for a short while, until next week when a team has several days to prepare for him. It's time to see what Lark can do and divide and conquer the various QB factions in the locker room in the process.
I think Tooblue is spot on here. I think you split reps in practice this week and you see if this inspired Heaps at all. If BYU would have lost this game say they just can't punch it in at the end but Riley did drive them the length of the field it is a no-brainer that Heaps starts next week. One thing I doubt we see is a true QB system again.

Seconded. These are just college kids.

Riley gave him the opportunity to go make a play, something Jake didn't do because he won't put any touch on the ball. But Jake did put one up for Hoff in the endzone that hit him in the chest, and he didn't make the play. Probably would have saved the game for Jake. Apo failed on a similar play. They would have been difficult passes, but no more difficult than the 2 great catches Hoffman made on Riley ducks.

I thought last year that if you were going to play both, why not have Heaps be the starter and give Nelson significant time a la Tebow's freshman year at Florida? That's the way you split reps between these types of quarterback. I wouldn't mind seeing that, even though I've lost faith in Heaps.

Colt McCoy's second best year was his freshman year. Tim Tebow's best year was his first year starting. Kellen Moore has improved by 35 points between his freshman year and his senior year--the catch is that Moore's passing rating his freshman year was 41 points higher than Heaps's freshman year. Moore also showed improvement his sophomore year. Chris Leak improved by 12 points between his freshman year and senior year, Leak also had to deal with dramatically different offenses during his time at Florida. Ty Detmer's best passing rating year was his Sophomore year, his first full year starting after seeing some limited action his Freshman year. The examples are legion. Either they're good to very good at the start and improve moderately, or they're very good at the start and get significantly better.

The examples are few of guys that are mediocre at the start, decline their second year and then all of a sudden blossom. Even John Beck improved by 20 points between his freshman and sophomore years.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I say give nelson reps in practice. Give heaps opportunity to put in extra hours. Start nelson. If heaps shows humility and team attitude and puts in extra work then give him the second quarter of the remaining games against shitty teams. Open it back up in the off season. Heaps doesn't deserve anything more and giving him anything more just feeds his ego and will be detrimental.

This all seems unfair given that so many good QB's don't play their 1st 2 years in college and may have very well been bad if they had played under worse circumstance. Kellen Moore is great, and Heaps isn't in the same league. But Heaps would be much better if he played for Boise.

I seriously doubt hed be markedly improved.

I understand thr arguments against starting Nelson, but he's played a handful of series this season and has shown the ability to move the ball. Thats pretty hard to dispute.

I still think Heaps is the future and have high hopes for his Jr. And Sr. Years, esp if we hire a QB coach.

I just caught the highlights again. I think Riley was throwing to Mathews on the Jacobsen catch (if we was throwing to anyone).

To be fair he gave more than just the Moore example of guys who stepped in and did well early.

It was a fluke. Riley Nelson was palying his ex team, you had all kinds of weird emotions going on, he won the game with a tipped pass. Nelson and Heaps are both bad quarterbacks. A few years back I rolled a bowling ball for the first time in maybe 25 years. I got a strike. Did that mean I would keep getting strikes? It's a good thing BYU has nothing to play for.

I thought one of the replay angles (the second replay shot ... you can watch it on espn3) pretty clearly shows he was throwing for JJ.
