Its just hard to see any positives moving forward if we are really moving to the scramble-drill offense era.

Even if by "era" you mean "1.5 years at the very most" and if by "scramble-drill offense" you mean "having a mobile QB and running plays, like a great many teams do, to take advantage of that", I still don't get why you're being such an Eeyore about this. Heaps sucks right now, and maybe always will. There is no downside of having some competition for him. If Heaps continues to suck, then we don't have to count on him, and there's always the chance that he stops sucking due to the added motivation provided by being yanked.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostIts just hard to see any positives moving forward if we are really moving to the scramble-drill offense era.

This.Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View PostHypes isn't a one dimensional quarterback, he's a zero dimensional quarterback.
The problem with Heaps is that he needs x, y, z, and then a, b, c all to go exactly as outlined for him to perform. So we get 2-3 throws a game where we have a great QB. I don't think you can question his heart--he's just not an improvisor. He seems a lot like Beck in that regard, and I'm guessing that by his senior season, when he's had enough experience to incorporate all the inevitable variations into his head, he'll be unstoppable.
Our last three games have convinced me that throwing motion/mechanics is overrated in college these days. Nelson's motion still looks worlds better than Wynn's, and I'd give anything to have Wynn as our quarterback right now, because he knows how to get the ball to a decent place, where the receiver can make a play. and he has a good sense of the game. The last two guys have shown just how nice it is to have some mobility, even with a poor arm--let's face it, both of these guys deserved wins.
The whole decision's moot though, as I imagine Riley won't last more than a game or two.
And am I the only that thinks Riley's passes look about ten times better than they last year? A low bar, sure, but serious improvement. I don't think he'll be as easy to gameplan for as last year.At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

The horrible truth.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostThe ceiling has been set for this team for the next 2 years and boy is it low, can't pretend to hope the team will ever be great now, you are lying to yourself.
If you are Tanner Mangum, stay the hell away from a Doman coached offense, pocket passers need not apply.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

I'm happy for the team and for Riley, he played with heart and made plays last night. I wouldn't be excited, but I'd be fine with him being the QB the rest of 2011.
My question is why does there seem to be zero chance of seeing Lark? Has anyone here been to practices/scrimmages, is he that bad? Wasn't he a very good get recruiting wise (not Heaps hype)?Get confident, stupid

What people overlook on the 40 yard pass to Jacobsen is that Heaps would have never made the throw, he would have been sacked on that play. Hypes has had an aversion towards throwing in the middle of the field, but he has an aversion for good reason, look how many horrible throws he's made and look at the ints and almost ints he's made in that area.
People think we have had problems with running the ball because we don't run it enough. I think the real problem is we can't run the ball because we can't connect on passes in the middle of the field with any regularity. The defense knows this so they don't have to respect the pass as much. It doesn't matter how good your oline is when all the lbs concentrate on the run and the safeties are playing closer to the line of scrimmage than they normally would. The production out of the TEs has to be worst in the country and I don't think that's because of the TEs themselves or Doman's play calling. It's because Heaps and his inability to see anything in the middle of the field.
The stats that JL cited about Hypes's 3rd down completion rate is truly mind-blowing and it's utterly inescapable that there's something seriously wrong with either Hypes's head, accuracy and/or true talent level. As I mentioned before, Hypes wouldn't be the first big recruit that was a complete bust and people need to wrap their heads around that. Against some of the cruddier competition last year he at times look competent and one time he looked great. But I will also note that Bret Engemann looked all world against Virginia in the second half back in 2000 and then looked incredible against Syracuse in 2002. In other words a broken clock is right twice a day. Hypes has shown zero improvement over last year thus far. And there are some glaring gaps in his play that are impossible to ignore, most notably his lack of production in the middle of the field, his awful red zone play, his inability to ever convert a third down that's over 5-6 yards and the fact that he has produced more points for the opposing teams than his own team.
Riley Nelson has earned himself the opportunity to start. If and when he gets hurt, Heaps can come back in and if he plays well then he can keep the job. Otherwise, he needs to be on short leash and James Lark (a 3-4 star recruit that was sandwiched between Bradford and Dalton coming out of high school) should get a shot. Heaps hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt. He's earned a short leash if and when Nelson either gets hurt or starts playing worse than Heaps did over the first four and a half games this season.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

yeah. Nice win. I like Nelson's fire and the team played with fire with him but when teams can game plan for him it won't be pretty. Hypes isn't the answer either. I am ok with Nelson starting because Hypes really really sucks and Nelson is better right now.Originally posted by jay santos View Postlol.
Gutsy performance and awesome finish, but no thanks.

I made a mistake in my previous post. Lark was sandwiched between Josh Freeman and Sam Bradford coming out of high school. Mitch Mustain was the #1 QB recruit coming out of high school that year, lol. Lark came in when John Beck was a senior and came back from the mish when Max Hall was a senior and then was behind all world Mitch Mustain Hypes in 2010 and the only QB on the team with any playing experience--Riley Nelson. Apparently the coaching staff didn't want a completely inexperienced QB backing up another completely inexperienced QB.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostI'm happy for the team and for Riley, he played with heart and made plays last night. How many are on the heaps bandwagon if we don't get lucky on that terrible last throw to di luigi? And that was not much of a hold.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostThe ceiling has been set for this team for the next 2 years and boy is it low, can't pretend to hope the team will ever be great now, you are lying to yourself.

I guess I'm on board by default. The guy still can't throw. But at least he can give his receivers a chance.
how did heaps miss apo so bad early in the game? Easy throws that weren't even close. Not that apo was open anyway.

Not on any Nelson bandwagon (although I am very happy for him and the team) nor am I on a Hypes bandwagon. I am on the lets get Lark some meaningful reps during SJSU bandwagon.Originally posted by Jacob View PostHow many are on the heaps bandwagon if we don't get lucky on that terrible last throw to di luigi? Honestly, I was calling for lark last night. Last night when abs came in, it was a perfect setup to have what happened happen. Now we have half a fan base that buys the legend of riley. I hope he is great, but I still don't see it. Worse case scenario for heaps happened last night, getting pulled right as the competition becomes cream puff. Hopefully the coaches realize Jake is the future even if he is pulled for a game or two.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostNot on any Nelson bandwagon (although I am very happy for him and the team) nor am I on a Hypes bandwagon.
