Benching Heaps needed to be done. He needs to be humbled, and poor performance on the field is apparently not doing that. He needs to know he's capable of losing his starting position. I think that shock has hit him tonight. I want him to be good, I'm by no means a Heaps hater. He has a lot of raw talent it just needs to be developed.

If sitting on the bench a bit will knock some fire into Jake, then let's do that. If he needs the reps, then let's do that. Simply put, I'm for whatever needs to happen for our Big 12 talent QB to grow into that role.
Jake Heaps would turn into a mass of shriveling mangina in the B12 even with a full season of play.

          Train? More like a scooter.

But since Heaps is a hoss--specifically a spavined broken nag with botts and glanders--guess I'll take a ride.

The ceiling has been set for this team for the next 2 years and boy is it low, can't pretend to hope the team will ever be great now, you are lying to yourself.

If you are Tanner Mangum, stay the hell away from a Doman coached offense, pocket passers need not apply.

                  Riley Nelson = Matt Saracen
                  Jake Heaps = JD McCoy

After thinking about it, I've concluded that if Riley starts next week then this debate will probably play out a bit like it did last year. There is no way Riley gets through the season healthy playing the way he does. He hasn't learned that mobile quarterback balance between scrambling and avoiding contact.

YOhio you forget that Riley gets to feast on the worst teams in the nation in the coming weeks(SJSU, NMSU), BYU fans will be ready to build a statue for Nelson by the end of the year(besides that fluky TCU game where we lose by 60). And then next year will start and reality will hit when BYU wins 2-3 games if they are in the Big 12.

Not to mention he had the benefit of playing against a D tonight that hadn't prepared for him at all (and don't BYU fans know all about the effects that can have on a D). Once teams start scouting him, some of those throws that were open tonight won't be open again. That said, Heaps is a whiny, sissy bitch and riding pine for a few games might just be the kick in ars he needs. Also, it was nice to see a BYU QB look off a safety for once this season.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not nearly as down on Riley as you are. I love to watch him because he loves playing the game. He's smiling, leading the team and showing great body language. He's also a gamer and doesn't shy away from contact. While it's fun to watch our little qb plow over a hapless defensive back, it's going to get him injured at some point, even against SJSU or some other scrub team.

I am definitely not on the bandwagon, but I don't know what else can be done at this point. The offense showed some fire under Nelson for the first time which was nice to see and I love the kid's emotion. Going 95 yards to win was great, but I cannot believe how many breaks Nelson caught. Apart from the tip for the TD, he had the heave to Jacobsen which looked like a prayer, and Hoffman bailed him out with great grabs on terrible throws a few times. And don't even get me started on the clock management in that last drive. Somehow it worked out to give USU almost no time left, but that was not planned. Just lucky. It was nice having some mobility in there and it threw off USU's defense just enough to win, but like others have said that won't last long once teams scout him.

Don't get me wrong, Heaps has shown absolutely nothing this year, but seeing the fans storm the field and knowing many will be saying Nelson is the answer frustrated me to no end. But hey, Riley does have something Jake doesn't now...a TD pass to a TE.

Whether he's super talented or good or not, to have a functional offense your QB needs to be a leader. Jake is not yet at this time a leader. Maybe he comes through this, puts in the time, and finds himself. Maybe he transfers to Fresno. But the team doesn't believe in him and it affects how they play. He has been truly awful. He will get more chances, how he does then will shape whether or not he gets to be the man. But as of right now he's lost that right. To start him against sjsu would be a betrayal to the team. Riley should start and if (when) he can't get it done we will see Heaps again. Maybe Lark. But for now Rileys earned it and that's just reality.

I agree though... Heaps and Domans utter failure this season is really really bad for BYU football and the program moving forward. Truly a worst case scenario unfolding for us.
