OK - so I'm tracking backwards just a little bit...

It seems obvious, as you say, that the strength of the BE is hoops. So - with there being some schools that have football and others that don't, how does that play when they divide up the cash from a TV contract?

Does the contract outline how much is for football and how much is for basketball?

    Just curious...

Boise, SMU, AFA, Navy, SMU, and UCF to give them 12?

Who does that assume remains? Rutgers, USF, Cincy, UConn, WVa, Ville?

I assume you take the 5 noobs (minus UCF) plus Cincy for the West division, and the rest are in the East.

According to a source with direct knowledge of Friday's Big East conference call, the conference has sent conditional invitations to Houston and SMU for all sports and Air Force and Boise State for football only.

It's almost awe inspiring how badly BYU has screwed this up.

Not nearly as absurd as the Big East in Idaho. What could be more demonstrative that the Big East is just trying to live day to day? How good will Boise be after Chris Peterson? For the love of God somebody put a bullet through the Big East's head.

Really, Boise should stay where it is, in the first Superconference. The Big East was conceived by Dave Gavitt as a basketball conference. The seven basketball only schools need to defect and form a new conference.

WV Voting for Higher Exit Fees

WVU sources confirmed to the Gazette Monday afternoon that, barring any unforeseen developments during the call, the school will cast its vote to double the fee. That would be a clear signal that WVU is committed to rebuilding the conference.

If the proposal passes, the Big East then believes it would be on better footing to go ahead with expansion plans that include inviting six new schools to join -- Boise State, Navy and Air Force as football-only members and Central Florida, Houston and SMU for all sports. The inclusion of those schools, particularly Boise State, would go a long way toward the Big East retaining its status as an automatic-qualifying conference in the Bowl Championship Series.

There is no timetable for extending those invitations, but most observers believe it will come soon.

In order to pass, the proposal must garner votes from 11 of the 14 member schools. That number does not include Pitt and Syracuse, which have announced plans to leave the Big East for the ACC.

The Big East's current by-laws call for a $5 million exit fee and a 27-month waiting period before schools can leave the conference. The 27-month waiting period is not an issue on the table in tonight's vote.

There has been speculation that at least one school, Louisville, would not participate in the call. The Cardinals are believed to be a candidate for inclusion should the Big 12 expand to 12 members or need to replace Missouri in order to remain at 10. West Virginia has also been mentioned in those discussions, but is nonetheless expected to participate in the call and vote for the proposal to double the exit fee.
WVU voting this way tells me they have been informed by the SEC and maybe the Big 12 they are not a likely expansion candidate. Unfortunately for BYU, it appears Louisville is on deck to replace Missouri if they bolt for the SEC.

How do AFA and SMU get football-only invites over BYU?

                            Shameful.

I think SMU was full membership.

We don't want football only BE membership. That is lame.

I don't want any membership in the big east. That would be lame.
