BYU likely will join the Big East Conference as a football-only member — perhaps within a day or two — The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.

Why? The road to being the conference champion is much easier in this set up than in the Big 12, being the conf champion gets you at the table. Once you are there you can talk about something bigger.

This Big East is every bit as good in football as the Big East was 5-6 years ago when WVU was a game away from the BCS title game, and USF was #2 in the country at one point.

If some basketball scheduling agreements come with it also, this is great for BYU.

Not excited about this in the slightest.

I suppose we must have a backup plan. Doubtless the restrictions against leaving the conference i.e. $10m in penalty and 27 month wait, will not apply if the conference loses its automatic BCS bid. I'm guessing both BYU and Boise would have required this.

BYU must have also got ESPN to agree to something regarding non-conference games and we are confident that we could go back to independence if it all falls apart.

Still, this pretty much sucks. But, if we only have 8 conference games, and keep broadcast rights to OOC games, this would be superior to independence by a long shot.

Only a positive if some sort of game commitment is involved. As for an easier road, why would I want to travel clear across the country to play the likes of these teams in football? Why would winning an extremely watered down autoqualifier make me feel any better than finishing .500 in the Big 12? How long until the BCS just changes the qualifications and goes to 4 larger conferences in the BCS? I get we'd take our lumps and win the Big 12 once every 15 years but I just can't get behind this yet.

It beats the Hell out of the current abortion taking place in Provo but only marginally.

Not thrilled about BEAST, but not pissed either. Slightly better than the MWC and way better than Independence, but not nearly as good as B12.

OK. So annual games against the following:

Utah
AFA
Boise State
Houston
SMU
UCF

3 Games vs east division

continuing series againt ND for the next 6 years or so.
Annual game against Texas or the team we are able to replace them with.

That leaves us with only one more game to schedule. Will we keep Hawaii on the schedule? Washington State series might as well be cancelled. We got USU in for a 2 for 1, so we might as well keep them to off set the games against ND.

Fellas, the B12 doesn't have its shit together. Putting the Big 8 with Texas was a long-term recipe for disaster.

This was our best possible outcome in light of the B12 not being able to a make a decision to save its life (literally, this is a case of "if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice").

I'm happy. This is very good for our football program. We get to play BSU in what I believe will become much more interesting as a rivalry than Utah, whom we will force to play us in November, if at all. I love playing AF. It will be fun to have BYU football in Texas, in FL and every once in a while, in the Northeast.

Plus, we AQ...no excuses at this point.

The B12 would be better competition but I doubt OU and UT can ever co-exist over the long-run.

Utah game will move to November or it will be dropped, period.
