The reason I wouldn't be surprised is because we've had a mixed bag with Heaps and Heaps is currently a freshman. Many Cougar QBs have had great games or runs of games only to end up as someone's back-up. Remember again that Engy was a back-up when he went to the Oakland Raiders and he had put together a couple of very impressive games in his career. Remember also that these are all young kids and very little would need to occur for them to struggle mentally or get distracted (see McKay Jacobsen this year). Basically, I think Heaps has better skills than Lark or Munns but he had better skills than Nelson too. Predicting who will start on a single game or throw the previous year is hard/impossible to do. That said, I expect Heaps will start but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't.

And thus you will never be completely wrong no matter who starts.Originally posted by KillerDog View PostThe reason I wouldn't be surprised is because we've had a mixed bag with Heaps and Heaps is currently a freshman. Heaps is a bad, bad, man. We all know it. He just needs to practice that swing pass ad nauseam. Otherwise, he makes good decisions and just plain puts the offense in a good position all day long."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"

I think once his tight ends step up as much as his receivers have, he is going to be deadly. There are some areas where he can be much more exact with his accuracy. Balls are dropped but sometimes he doesn't help his backs or receivers with the short passes by throwing it to the wrong shoulder or high or being just a hair off. There is still a tad bit of disjointedness. However, he is only a true freshman. There is no doubt UTEP sucks, but Heaps also showed well against Utah, IMO.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostAny updated thoughts after the bowl game? Was progress made again? Is Heaps as filthy as he looked or was UTEP's pass D just that bad?
In essence, I think he is going to be spectacular and probably next year. If Ross Apo and two of the tight ends develop and fulfill their potential he will be throwing to the best BYU receiving corps ever his junior and senior year. I am not yet convinced he has the best runningback behind him, but they aren't slouches. If Quesada develops like Curtis Brown did each year, BYU will be as deadly on offense as they have ever been.
I still think Hall had a better supporting cast, but I think Heaps is a better qb than Hall and I also think that Mendenhall staying as the DC is going to be a benefit for Heaps that Hall was without his junior and senior years.
I hope Jimbo gets his degree because I expect #9 to be retired a few years after Jake's elgibility is exhausted. I would like to see what I think will be my two favorite BYU qbs get the greatest # in BYU football retired together! Perhaps that is a bit of hyperbole....perhaps not.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I am skeptical that Quezada will be as good a runningback as Harvey Unga, and the tight ends need to step up, but Heaps and Hoffman are both really good. I am beginning to wonder if Hoffman might actually get an NFL shot. Everytime I think he just doesn't have the speed he pulls off a great kickoff return. Clearly he isn't a blazer, but I think he will have enough ability to make people miss mixed with his size that if he develops good hands I could forsee him playing receiver in the NFL. If Apo can be a legitimate deep threat, Hoffman will crush teams on long outs and mid tier routes across the middle.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostHas BYU ever had a more promising group true freshmen at the skill positions than they have right now with Quezada, Heaps and Hoffman? I sure as heck don't think so. And watching them today makes an otherwise shitty season a lot easier to take.
I really think that BYU is going to be really physical and talented the next 3 years. It is going to be really fun.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I don't know if you can glean progress from this win as UTEP was horrible. However, he did everything he needed to do to impress and dished out an old-fashioned butt kicking. I think today he set the stage for next season in a dramatic way.
It will also be interesting to see how Q makes the transition against tougher competition.

He did play better but he also faced worse competition. He hasn't had a good game against a decent defense yet.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostHeaps final numbers:

Your hatred of BYU does not allow you to answer objectively.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostHe did play better but he also faced worse competition. He hasn't had a good game against a decent defense yet.

How am I wrong? What good defense has he had a good game against? You have told us over and over how good games against bad teams don't count. I guess unless you are St JakeOriginally posted by cougjunkie View PostYour hatred of BYU does not allow you to answer objectively.

Your jealousy is showing. Don't be mad that Heaps is better than Wynn.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostHow am I wrong? What good defense has he had a good game against? You have told us over and over how good games against bad teams don't count. I guess unless you are St Jake
