I think BYU has a very good QB in Heap.
I listened to the radio today while in the car. The postgame shows were fun. It seems that all the Utah radio guys have BYU pegged for a historic season in 2012.
My biased observation is this:
1) Heap has improved over the course of the season.
2) The schedule, outside of Utah, was much worse in the 2nd half of the season than the first
3) UTEP is a very, very, very bad team. Outside of a couple of athletic receivers/return guys, they have zero talent and would probably be challenging for 6 or 7 in a 9 team MWC. That team went 1-6 over the last 7 games. Not good.
4) It's not often that GoatMaster gets this excited and starts talking this way about future teams.
Okay, so, since it's a few days until Utah gets it's ass kicked by Boise, I'll give you my prediction for BYU for 2011.
BYU will lose 2-3 games next season vs. Texas, Utah, Ole Miss, OrSU and Hawaii.
I'll be honest, I think BYU beats Utah next year. I just don't think Utah has an offense or a QB that can win that game in LES. If Utah gets the McGill kid JC safety transfer, maybe Utah puts a good enough defense to slow down BYU. Who knows. So, pick 1 or 2 losses amongst the other
games.
They will win the other 7 games. UCF is the only game of those 7 that even has the chance to be close.
So, I say BYU finishes 10-2 or 9-3.
2012 does look like a pretty nice schedule. You will be playing BSU at BSU. Although, Moore will be gone and so will his receivers. Hell, maybe Peterson will even be gone by then. Boise should be in a down year by their standards. ND on the road is very beatable. OrSU is a tough team. IIRC, Katz will be there, but the wonder twins will be gone. Utah *should* be your toughest game...it's on the road and Utah should have a QB with some experience by then, along with some nice receivers and RBs. @GT should be very doable if BYU is any good.
I think Utah will be BYU's toughest game in 2012 and it will be a road game. Followed by OrSU at home.

You are right he is better but not sure what that has to do with Heaps not having a good game against a decent defense yet.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYour jealousy is showing. Don't be mad that Heaps is better than Wynn.

cj, I'll readily admit that it appears that Heap will be a better QB than Wynn.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYour jealousy is showing. Don't be mad that Heaps is better than Wynn.
However, I'd be interested in your answer to mpfunk.
I actually think Bronco managed Heap well this season. The only loss that was inexcusable was the USU loss. Perhaps that game would have been won had Heaps been getting constant snaps. But that was as much on Jaime Hill as anyone.
However, by holding him out and splitting reps, BYU lost games that people thought they would lose and would most likely have lost with just Heap getting time.
By splitting time, the blame was not directed at Heap and he could be sent in full time at just the right moment when a win was assured. He came off looking like a hero.
I think that BYU really only lost the USU game because of the management of the QBs, but in the long run, the handling of Heap and Nelson may well have catapulted Heap forward by inserting him full-time vs. the weaker portion of the schedule.
I know a lot of BYU fans won't agree, but I think the way Heap was handled was actually pretty good in retrospect.
For the record, I'd take the guy at the U. in a second. I don't see anything on utah's sideline that is as good as he is right now or has the potential or eligibility.

Why do you keep saying Heap? It bugs me for some reason. Anyways, carry on.

I do agree that Heaps has improved. He has a lot of talent and potential. Just wanted to point out junkies inconsistencies.Originally posted by jay santos View PostThe numbers junkie posted, with adjustment for opponents' pass efficiency defense and chart. What inconstistencies? His only claim was that Heaps had improved and then you come swooping in with this irrelevant nonsense about him not having played well against a good defense.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI do agree that Heaps has improved. You're just cranky because if it weren't for having the luck of the devil himself the mighty, mighty Utah Utes would be ending the season on a 5 game skid.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI do agree that Heaps has improved. Heaps made incredible progress throughout the season which is to expected out of a true freshman. I said from the first time I saw the kid in Spring Ball that this kid was and is and incredible talent.
I think one of the biggest things he needs to work on this off season are his short throws, he has a hard time taking off some of the juice and throws a 5 to 10 yard patter with the same velocity he throws the deep 18 yard comeback or a 20 to 25 yard dig route. This will be helped with time and getting even more comfortable in the pocket. The kid has an incredible future."Take it to the Bank"

He actually did bring up a relevant point. Jake made a ton of progress throughout the season. I think that if you change out Game 1, 2, 3 etc. with the name of the actual opponent it tells a little different story.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostWhat inconstistencies? Jake Heaps: 219-383 (57.2%) for 2,316 yards, 15tds and 9 ints. He finishes with a passer rating of 116.20.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostYour jealousy is showing. Don't be mad that Heaps is better than Wynn.
Jordan Wynn: 186 -299 (62.2%) for 2334 yard, 17 tds and 10 ints. He finishes with a passer rating of 139.9. And these stats aren't padded with games vs. New Mexico and UNLV.
Based on the statistics it shows that Wynn is the better q.b. here.
I will be the first one to admit that stats don't tell the entire story though.Last edited by Hot Lunch; 12-19-2010, 12:08 PM."Take it to the Bank"
