Those two statements can be consistent. Look at the defense, people have been saying for the past couple years that Hill's coverage schemes were too complicated (see lack of nickle, only playing redshirt senior walkons at saftey) and hard to learn yet too vanilla (see numerous comments from opposing offenses on how they knew exactly what was coming). Having said that I don't agree that the problems on offense are because the system is too hard to learn.

One of my BYU buddies at church comes up to me yesterday "throw the damn ball downfield". He's the same type that was up in arms over Riley Nelson getting any time earlier this year. It was in the chapel after sacrament. I looked at him. Paused. Then jumped on him, twisted his arm behind his back and shoved his face against the wall and said "look what happened every time Heaps threw it downfield, dumb ass!"

I was at the game and there were very few times that the receivers were actually open downfield. And when they were, the safeties closed on the throw very quickly.Originally posted by jay santos View PostOne of my BYU buddies at church comes up to me yesterday "throw the damn ball downfield". My complaints haven't had anything to do with complexity of the offense (or lack thereof), but rather its coherence. I don't think have packages of related plays and calling them according to down and distance, field position, what the defense is doing, etc. has anything to do with complexity. Perhaps it would add some complexity to not always run the same plays from the same formations, but not too much. I also don't think it would be too complex to show a bit of creativity on occasion.Originally posted by jay santos View PostGood (not) take from TBS via CB on Anae:

"The offense is too complicated for our young players."
So which is it fire Anae because the offense is too vanilla and bland.
Or fire Anae because the offense is too complicated?
Get it straight, people. I know we need to fire Anae, but we need our logic consistent or people will think we're just being idiots.

I'm not sure this discussion has anywhere else to go, but for me, I'm in favor of foregoing gimmicky Kyle Whittingham shit to demand execution on every play. I am convinced that we are going to benefit from having a running game in the future. I also think that Anae's offense is much more nuanced than you are giving it credit for. It requires a lot to turn one dimensional talent into success.Originally posted by woot View PostMy complaints haven't had anything to do with complexity of the offense (or lack thereof), but rather its coherence. I also think having the support of one's administration and head coaches is maybe the most effective tool in managing an offense. If players like KVN know that they're playing for a lame duck coach, real problems happen.Te Occidere Possunt Sed Te Edere Non Possunt Nefas Est.

Admittedly I don't watch a lot of Utah, I have never been under the impression that they do a lot that is gimmicky. In fact I would say Utah is an execution based team, with little to no flash.Originally posted by camleish View PostI'm not sure this discussion has anywhere else to go, but for me, I'm in favor of foregoing gimmicky Kyle Whittingham shit to demand execution on every play.Get confident, stupid

yeah, it was kind of a weird comment. I'd argue that we've seen Anae's ceiling as a playcaller.
I'd also argue that young good coaches like Brandon Doman, who also happens to be the staff's best recruiter are who BYU should be investing their future in.
Doman has turned down 2 different OC jobs at 2 BCS Schools to stay at BYU. That isn't going to last forever. Sooner or later he's going to bolt and it would be an egregious error on Bronco's part to let him leave without giving him further responsibilities.
BYU needs to give him playcalling responsibilities and let Anae take a different position in the football program or let Anae move on.
It's time to make a change after this season is over. Coach Anae's position within the program needs to be seriously re-evaluated. And he's not the only one. Coach Higgins is also deservedly on the hot seat.Last edited by EdmondDantes; 10-19-2010, 05:28 PM.

I just heard from inside the Athletic Department that Anae's job is not as secured as I would have believed. There is more than a little belief that his hubris caused him to back Nelson over Heaps (the better to show that he could adapt his system to any skill set). There is also a frustration with the way the players are pulling away from him and don't trust him anymore. The discussion though is not to pull in a new OC from outside the program but to try and develop an OC internally. Basically, the idea is to have Reynolds school young Doman and they will be Co-Offensive Coordinators. This would not be a dramatic change in the offense other than a movement away from some of the wide splits and TT formations toward narrower splits, more running to set up the pass and "Pro-Style" formations. This is not to say this is what will happen, just to relate that the fan dislike for Anae is echoed in some of the AD staff's opinions.
