If Ty were willing to come I'd wager he would be fine being a position coach. He's no dummy and knows that in spite of the fact he played in the NFL he has no experience coaching anyone in college. His current high school gig will be a good stepping stone. I think Ty knows he isn't going to get a high profile college coaching job from the get go and will need to cut his teeth being a position coach.

Don't people think that Ty Detmer should get a little experience coaching football first? His rich boys' prep school team, the St. Andrew Crusaders, that he is coaching hasn't even come close to winning a game yet even with their push over schedule.Originally posted by RedSox View PostI want to bitch slap every BYU fan who thinks that Detmer will magically be a great OC in D-1 football. I think it'd be a fine gamble to bring him on as a position coach first, but to think this guy will be a great OC is ridiculous in my opinion.

I agree he's experienced on the sidelines, but I'm not sure that his experience translates into "great play caller" or at the very least "better playcaller than Anae." I'd be more inclined to invite his father to BYU than Ty, quite frankly.Originally posted by CardiacCoug View PostI agree that it would be better for him to start as a position coach. But being a back-up QB in the NFL for as many years as he did it is basically an assistant coaching position. He doesn't need that much experience.Last edited by Green Monstah; 10-17-2010, 06:23 PM.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Hmm... you might have a point.Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostDoesn't Detmer have as much experience in calling plays as Anae when Anae came from Texas Tech?"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

How about they just bring Norm Chow back given that BYU will have all that ESPN money?"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

we could rename the stadium "norm chow's house of pain," and pay him $20mm a year and he still wouldn't be interested.Originally posted by Ted Nugent View PostHow about they just bring Norm Chow back given that BYU will have all that ESPN money?Te Occidere Possunt Sed Te Edere Non Possunt Nefas Est.

We all have the utmost respect for Detmer as a player, and there is no question that he knows the game inside and out and certainly maximized his physical abilities. Despite serving 14-years or however long it was carrying a clipboard and holding the occasional PAT and finding the field as an injury replacement, Detmer was not a coach. As far as I've read (and maybe I'm wrong, it's happened before) he was never involved in things like game planning, he never spent his time organizing practices and giving critiques, he was probably the one being critiqued.Originally posted by Surfah View PostDetmer spent 14 years coaching in the NFL.
Do I think Detmer is coaching material? Absolutely. But I can't go out on a limb and say that he's ready to go right now as an OC, or that he's a guy that is going to relate to 19-23 year old kids off the bat and get them to listen to him. He's got enough clout as a Heisman winner and with a 14-year NFL career to suggest that he could, but the coaching side of his resume, it's not there IMO.
