The only way transferring makes any sense is if he can be assured a starting spot at a place that will give him the type of exposure he wants/needs to get to the next level.

I don't think there's a team that fits that description. His freaking family moved to Provo; I bet he redshirts next year and competes for the starting job the year after, unless his parents are amenable to moving to Ogden or Cedar City.

Heaps looks worse than the very first time he stepped foot on a college football field. I have no idea how that happened.

I'm a Brandon Doman fan but I have to believe that some of this is on him - but obviously the best QB coach can't correct the sort of compounding lack of confidence and vision that seems to have taken root in Heaps head.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand this. He comes in and instantly the difficulty level of every pass seems to double. Someone was saying these are one read timing throws. Is that right? If it is, I don't understand why they wouldn't get him some easier throws to get a rhythm going (though I think on the majority of those outs yesterday he actually looked a bit better throwing them).

That's what I'm wondering. 2 1/2 step drop and boom, the ball is gone. Like a robot. Are those the plays they are calling for Heaps?

Sadly, he seems totally uptight, like he has no flow to his game. So different from the Jake Heaps that was going to score the winning TD on Utah last year until Anae/Bronco/Doman opted to sit down and go for a 40 yard FG.

For the first time all year, I am convinced now that Nelson is BYU's guy. I have been a big heaps guy until yesterday. And it really had nothing to do with either QB.

A combination of Doman's offense and his play calling do not fit Heaps style. He needs to be in a different system altogether. Shotgun, quick read and throw. I think he would do well in a texas tech or oklahoma state system. As soon as Heaps came in yesterday the play calling changed dramatically. It was like Doman forgot how to make it easy on his QB. How many difficult out throws did Heaps throw versus Nelson? 10 to zero? I swear Doman said we cant have a controversy so lets give him some hard throws. Either way though, the rollout QB leg heavy offense that Doman likes is not for Heaps. Riley often finds guys more open because he can buy time, and has the ability to make Doman look better with his legs. Heaps, not so much. I dont think I saw a double move from a receiver until Riley played.

The good news though, is that Taysom Hill is probably a better athlete than riley and has a much better arm. So Doman has his QB of the future.

But if I were Tanner Mangum, I would run for the hills.

I'm hoping we don't rush it with Hill. Give the guy a year or 3 with a red shirt to get him ready to start. BYU (or most schools for that matter) don't have much success with underclassmen leading the team.

I'm hoping Heaps gets his act together so he can start for 2 years after Nelson.

To be fair, though, Doman isn't dumb enough to stick with something if it clearly won't work, right? I mean, I envision that in the offseason, Doman is going to figure out what to do with a non-mobile, pocket-passing QB in case Riley goes down. RIGHT?

With you there. I don't ever want to see a freshman start again. And I'm not going to get ahead of myself with Hill yet. He was a lower ranked recruit than Lark, who I also keep hearing is like a combination of Riley and Jake. Yet that guy can't even come close to sniffing the field. He may end up great, but coming out of high school his apparent value was similar to our current 3rd and 4th string QB's.

If Heaps asks Bronco at the end of the season if he gets a chance to beat out Nelson next year, the answer will be no. If Heaps asks if he'll be the starting QB when Nelson leaves, Bronco will say you will be given a fair shot to beat out Hill (or Lark whoever backs up Nelson next year). I doubt that will be what Heaps wants to hear. He probably can find a coach who will promise the job after sitting out the transfer year.

I'm sure that's what Bronco would say, and while maybe not what Heaps wants to hear, he'd still have to look at the situation and see he has a pretty clear path here to becoming the starter. Lark and Riley are both juniors, so that clears them both out after his redshirt year. That would leave Munns coming up on his senior year, and Hill right off his mission as QB competition. I also think Bronco and Doman have invested a lot in him and would still give him every benefit of the doubt after his redshirt year, something he may not get at another program.

I'm not the kid, so I have no idea what he's thinking, but I'm starting to think the redshirt is a good idea. My only stipulation if I was him is that the redshirt not be pulled under any circumstances. If Riley goes down early in the season, then you roll with Lark.

If he stays, he gets his third year of experience at BYU and likely starts for two years.

Hill would have two springs, two summers, two fall camps, and one full season as a backup before starting. In the world of college football quarterbacking, that's a typical level of experience for a new starter. If Hill has even a modest level of talent, he's not going to go down easy in a QB battle, and based on Heaps' current reputation of being a practice hero/game zero, that's not going to be an easy decision for Bronco/Doman. I think the easier route, from Heaps' perspective would be to transfer.
