      Obviously.

Think of it in terms of "Likely Voters" and "Registered Voters." Except in this case it's "Fans" vs. "An Adult With Both a Pulse and a Utah Mailing Address."

What happens here is the Deseret News tells Dow Jones to tack an extra question onto its standard survey once or twice a year. So, after asking Mary Beth what she thinks of Gov. Herbert's performance, she gets asked who her favorite football team is. Mary Beth thinks Utah's football coach looks horribly fat in that big white sweater he always wears, so she chooses BYU. Or, she caught the tail end of a story on that nice young man, Derrick Weetle, while she was watching the news, so she chooses Utah.

You get he idea. Just polling the general public isn't relevant because the majority of the public isn't that engaged in college football, and, other than the $5 cap they might buy at Wal Mart to wear fishing, nobody is going to get a dime out of them.

"Fans" for the sake of measuring truly valuable market share are the ones that will consistently buy tickets, watch the games on TV, listen to sports talk radio regularly, etc. even when their team is having a bad year - the ones the business of sports cares about.

Take that "fan" population across the market and it averages out to be 2:1 in BYU's favor.

Nobody really cares about basketball scheduling. Completely different animal, and not an area where BYU is particularly vulnerable, although I don't think Oregon would be interested in going to the Marriott Center either way. It would probably be worth asking if they have any general insight on what the feeling is about BYU football, though. Oregon is one of the schools that would probably be a critical "swing" vote if conference armageddon happened and BYU ever became a Pac-16 candidate.

How do you get 2:1 in byu's favor?

Years of market resesarch into the demographics of sports-engaged consumers in the state of Utah.

              Focus groups, behavior surveys, etc.

Honest question, why does Utah licensed gear outsell byu gear? I guess some of that could be Utah adding new fans, but that would also mean the ratio is tightening.

                  ??? You do market research?

Because BYU has the most insanely idiotic merchandise marketing system you could ever conceive of. Utah has set up Red Zone stores all up and down the Wasatch Front, and has a huge inventory of styles and products.

BYU absolutely refuses to do any serious merchandising outside of the on-campus BYU Bookstore, and is most interested in developing new designs of pink t-shirts. I've joked before (sort of) that I wouldn't be shocked if they started requiring an active temple recommend to get in and buy BYU gear.

From a business and branding standpoint it's unjustifiable. But, nobody has ever accused BYU of putting smart business decisions first too often.

I had access to all kinds of media research back when I was working in the industry.

So most of your data is 5 years old. Thanks.

I remember back in the 90's the 2:1 was well substantiated. Even BYU BB got better ratings than Utah BB through the Majerus years. KSL would make more on one game than Utah's KJZZ contract was worth for the whole year. I'd guess now it's pretty close to 50-50 and trending in Utah's direction.

Since 2008, there has been a definite trend towards the Utes, even in the southwest portion if the state. Prior to that year, shogani's ratios were fairly accurate. Now, even in Provo south (St. George), it is quite even.

I would like to know if ERCougar would agree with my observations.

Just because that is what you two are seeing in Cedar City? As an anecdote, I was in southern Utah for new years and my wife and I went to wal-mart where they were selling the clearance holiday ornimants. They had these cool football helmet ornaments. Interestingly, we bought the last two BYU helmets while the entire shelf was filled with Utah ornaments, almost as if nobody had even touched it.

So, based upon my visual inspection of the southern part of the state during a holiday weekend, Southern Utah bleeds blue, or at least Southern Utah likes BYU helmet ornaments and hates Utah helmet ornaments.

I presume you were going to say something, am I correct Dr JIC? :-)
