If BYU stays now then the MWC could add someone like Houston to get the 12th team for a conference championship Saturday game.
How about the MWC voting for a conf championship on Sunday for all its sports lol.

I agree. And I never knew about MWC entrance fees either until Hair brought them up yesterday. What are they and how much? Like you, I don't get how a cash strapped Cal State public school has money for an exit and entry fee. Also, they had before July 1 to announce to be eligible for play 2011. Reports say this is being negotiated with the WAC, but why would Benson negotiate the exit penalties and time line for departure? He's about to be out of a job and needs to go after UNR's $5 million too even if they never signed and keep them until 2012 to buy some time to save his conference.

UNR and FSU add nothing. I find it curious that Hair said the invites were extended at the request of Comcast and their other TV partners. Hair admitted that he has never even been to Fresno. He has no clue what he is getting and neither do UNR and FSU.

Gary Patterson cracks me up. He is dancing around like the happiest guy in the world and, at the same time, seems pissed at BYU. See the video below:

It is an interesting smile that Gary has after he says: "We're not building a new stadium so we can back up."

BTW, he is wrong about Illinois.

We have to hand it to Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson. Much like Pac-10 commish Larry Scott, Thompson made a quick, preemptive strike while rumors circulated, and as a result BYU is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

With the WAC down to six schools following the announced departures of Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada, it seems unlikely that the Cougars will follow through with their plan to go independent in football while stashing their other teams in the WAC. BYU could now decide to find another home for its non-football teams or to stay put in the MWC. It's quite a change for a school that 36 hours ago had all the leverage.
Don't these people know that BYU was not suprised by any of this?

[ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/ncf/news/story?id=5475303"]TCU Horned Frogs football coach Gary Patterson warns BYU Cougars to "be careful what you wish for" - ESPN Dallas[/ame]

"All I can tell you is this: Just wait and see in the next two weeks before you make any judgments and see what happens in the national landscape," Patterson said. "Things that I know that maybe you don't know. That's all I'm going to tell you."
So what does Patterson know that the rest of us don't know? Is the Big 12 finally going to get off their butts and make a move to save their conference?

Cowherd was ripping BYU independance move in his opening take this AM. Basically said that Texas is the only program that could gain luster/$$$/prestige with a move to independance.

BYU was involved with extending the invitations. They are not between a rock and a hard place, as ESPN suggests. They haven't left the conference so it's not like they are homeless right now. In fact, they are in a better position than they were two days ago. Trust me when I say that BYU didn't think the MWC was going to sit by as they just walked away. Fresno and Nevada leaving weakens the WAC, but it does nothing for the MWC, but add a few mouths to feed. Plus, the lord won't let his leaders lead us astray.

I still can't understand why the Big 12 would want to stay at 10 unless they are to receive the exit penalties from Colorado and Nebraska. There's no way the Big12 survives with only 10 teams. At this point I think BYU is better off staying in the MWC until the Big 12-2 folds. the only way the Big 12 sticks around is if they actually get back to 12.

I've been thinking about this and I'm speculating that the whole "want to stay at 10" thing is a ploy to try and get the full exit penalties. If the Big 12 goes out and adds two teams right away, the exiting schools might try and argue that the exit penalties (at least the full amount) are not justified since there was not a big hit to the conference. With the Big 12 stating their desire is to stay at 10, maybe they have a better case to recoup that money.

Once the exit penalties are finalized, that could be when they make the move to add teams.
