Well, if we scour the media for quotes from the B12 and aTm over the past month, the B12 has indicated that nothing is going on but if something were to go on, they would move on it fast. The SEC has said that nothing is going on. And aTm has gone from " nothing is going on" to "we are looking into what it might look like if something were to go on" to today's "something is now going on but with no conference in particular."

aTm is gone. the B12 needs another team to rescue it. The rest is conjecture, admittedly. But the writing does seem to be on the wall.

More from Chip Brown on the Texas-BYU game going to the LHN...

I asked ESPN for comment on the progress of the Longhorn Network negotiations and if LHN would be in wide distribution in the state of Texas by Saturday night's game.

Here is what ESPN spokeswoman Keri Potts just told me:

"We're disappointed that operators like Grande and Time Warner Cable are choosing to deprive Texas fans of valuable content, including this weekend's Rice vs. UT game."


MY TAKE: What we have here is a big game of chicken folks. This one could go down to the wire, and there is a very real chance that the UT-Rice game isn't on TV sets across the state by Saturday night.

Also, look for ESPN to announce the second game on the Longhorn Network to be UT's home game against Kansas on Oct. 29.

That could be announced in the next couple days, according to an industry source. If those negotiations were to fall through, the fallback for ESPN would be putting the BYU game Sept. 10 on the LHN, the source said.

If BYU was the second game on LHN, it would be more nervous times for Texas fans as ESPN battles cable providers to get carriage of the LHN, considering the first two games of the season could be hardly visible to the TV watching public.

By the way, the Texas-BYU game is currently slotted for ESPN2, and industry sources said that game would be taken off ESPN2 and released only on LHN.

So BYU fans and Texas fans are both probably hoping ESPN can get a deal worked out with Kansas to be the second game on the Longhorn Network.

Does anyone need some extra tickets to the Texas game? Price is going up.
