Programs like that are already in BCS conferences.

Well fine... let them pay their own way.

Conferences spread out all the way across the country doesn't make much sense.

      • Flights are pretty much flights, whether it's a 90 minute flight or a 3 hour flight, they cost basically the same.

There's no BCS in women's gymnastics, silly.

Just for grins, I just dialed up Delta airlines and put the same dates in for ticket prices. SLC to Atlanta was 1000 dollars more than SLC to Denver.

Not scientific for sure... but instant results claim B.S.

Ummm check for flights more than a couple of weeks out. You will have a different result.

Delta owns Atlanta route. There are tons of competitors flying between Denver and SLC.

Ok did that... it was still more than twice as expensive.

You're not doing it right. Never seen a ticket to ATL for $1000 let alone 1k more than a ticket to anywhere.

Do track teams fly commercial? I've seriously never seen a D1 team flying on delta/united/whatever. High school teams yes, D1 programs no.

                        • Even if it's a charter flight, if a flight is twice as long, it costs twice as much for fuel and also there is twice the cost for the flight crew. Also, you have twice as much time for leasing the jet.

This is an argument that statman is going to lose.

It costs more to fly twice as far. Especially on charters which is the way most football teams fly.

                          • I just checked out LAX to Seattle and LAX to Dallas. On average the flight into Dallas is about $120 more. What do you critics of Devildog think, schools are made out money? For gymnatics team, that's almost $1k more. The PAC should tell Texas to shove off.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                            • For the record, I'm embarrassed that I allowed myself to be drawn into this flight cost discussion.

                              Ugh.

And UT isn't even in Dallas. Check the fare to AUS. Austin is impossible to get to without a five hundred dollar outlay and a layover or two.
