  • Perhaps already discussed but the slow, plodding and indecisive method that BYU does things may destroy a golden opportunity. How long will it take the GD BYU bureaucracy to condemn what its damn bureaucrats have wrought?!

"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

I doubt it moves the needle much.

      • I am now formally announcing my disapproval of Governor Abbott of Texas. I will never vote for him now. When it comes to my Cougs coinciding with local politics I am a one issue voter.

Yeah, I would rather vote for that tennis shoe wearing whats-her-name now.

Boren said that their existing Tier 1/2 contract with ESPN and Fox calls for a pro-rata increase for adding schools (about $20 million per school) - I think up to 6, but at least up to 4. Simply adding those teams won't automatically increase any other revenues (about $11 million per team last year), so if the additions all got an equal revenue share from the outset, then there would be less per-team revenue under the current contracts. Assuming they can't pull off P5 defectors like Arizona/ASU/UCLA, any teams added are likely to phase in to a full revenue share over time, just has been done with other P5 additions (Utah, TCU, etc). Phasing in those revenues for the newbies results in a chunk of the new revenues being distributed to the existing members, meaning they make more money overall until a) the new members are phased into a full share and/or b) the TV contracts are renegotiated.

This article from a year ago might help you get caught up:

Thanks for the article link. There's still a lot of unknowns about how expansion would work with the Tier 1&2 TV contract. Specifically, if the Big 12 could grab more money just by adding teams, then they would have rebuilt the SWC by adding Rice, Houston, and SMU. I suspect ESPN and Fox have approval rights of any expansion members to prevent a rebirth of the failed SWC. Further, Texas and OU would not be in a rush to rebuild the SWC because the conference would be in a poor position when the current TV contract expires. Consequently, Texas and OU decided to wait to make sure they couldn't attract anyone better then the current candidates (former SWC teams, AAC, and BYU). The Big 12 is not going to lure anyone from the SEC, Big Ten, or PAC-12 so that just left the ACC and Notre Dame. With the latest GoR and TV deal with the ACC, that option is gone so now the Big 12 is left to consider BYU, Cincy, Houston, UConn, etc. and explains why the Big 12 is all of a sudden in favor of expansion from their previous stance of wait-and-see. If Fox and ESPN have approval rights then BYU is in a strong position and probably already in.

                  • Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It's obviously in everyone's interest to at least send in an email. You know USU at least sent an email in an effort to possibly ride BYU's coattails and be their travel partner. Hey, an email is free and a hail mary is never a bad idea.

It's likely not any ACC teams since they can't leave due to the GOR. Any school that would leave the SEC or Big10 would be crazy. Sure Arkansas or Nebraska or maybe Missouri would fit better in the Big12, but the instability and lesser revenue makes such a move a non-starter. The PAC12 doesn't have better revenue, but it has very long term stability and is geographically isolated so the Arizona schools or anyone else would not leave. Maybe Colorado would consider it, but ultimately decide they like stability even if they get paid the same.

It would be funny though if the only team to not reach out to the Big12 is BYU...not Ha! Ha! funny..the other kind of funny.

Well...I'm assuming he's heard from all 10 of the Big12 schools regarding expansion. That narrows it some.
