  • Interesting post over on CB.

That board is now full of the, "it isn't the LDS leadership's fault" crowd.

First off, why so defensive. If the church leadership values visibility of the program over quality of the program, that is a decision they have the right to make. If it is true, why try to hide it from the fans.

I don't doubt for a minute there are those who are decision makers who have no problem throwing local fans under the bus for the benefit of world wide coverage.

It isn't evil vs good. It is just a decision on priorities.

I fall into the "I don't believe it's the LDS leadership's fault" crowd, but probably for a different reason than most. I doubt that the CES board is actively involved in B12, BE or any other conference negotiations. Without any inside information, my gut feeling is that the church would leave it up to the University President/VP to negotiate what they believe is the best course for the university then give it an up or down vote at one of their monthly meetings. My guess is they (the BOT) probably talked about the issue generally, then is leaving it up to BYU to work out specifics that fall within the general parameters they are comfortable with.

The biggest problem is that CardinalJim is talking out his ass. But if it can set up the premise that church leadership stands in the way of BYU fan happiness, then by all means do so. :stirthepot:

I would agree with you in most cases. However, I think this TV thing and "exposure" is a big deal. The goals of say the AD the the goals of the clergy might be quite different.

Whittingham basically said this when he said he thought he would have a better chance of reaching career goals with Utah vs BYU. So far he is proving to be right.

True. Church leaders might care more about the BYUTV network than BYU football. It is quite possible that they view BYU football as a means of supporting their worldwide network and not the other way around. This outlook sucks for a BYU fan, but I can see why they might want the BYU brand to go that direction.

A foolish notion IMHO, but it is possible.

He is? OK, what evidence do you have that he is talking out his ass.

I would sincerely like to believe this is all about the BIG12 not really wanting us and demanding we play on Sunday.

I guess I have missed your authoritative take on why we aren't in. Could you give it to me. Thanks.

              • My two cents is that the BOT is struggling with a classic "sunk cost" problem. They probably were pitched aggressively by the AD to build out BYUTV as a nationwide platform (maybe global) and probably fell in love with this. Then the ground shifted and the idea of sort of ditching all the exciting aspects (a sunk cost) became too difficult to get past.

Cardinal Jim is probably correct. I think the LDS leadership is probably too wedded to BYUTV...

Just when I was starting to like you!

Just as everyone here and elsewhere is tired of hearing about sources, I'm tired of talking with the folks in my extended family and my friends in TX about this...here and there and only if there's been another reason to talk but I'm pretty sick of this shit right now.

The reality is that this think has been so fluid that nothing matters about sources, etc., until it actually happens.

                          • ugh i gotta stop this non-login thing

you mean the time i was a few days ahead of the confirmed talks with OU/UT and the pac12 and then when TTU was the rumored candidate but that was only dispelled after a few weeks though i refuted that within days? Yes, i recall that. I've definitely been wrong, but that was not incorrect.

                            • Tommy Tuberville sez: I want 12.

"I would like too see us add a couple more in the future to get us back to 12 and a conference championship game," Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. "But who’s out there?"Everyone is kind of scrambling around trying to fill it up."

For now, the Big 12 will move on with 10 teams and no title game. Want to bring it back?

When the new commissioner arrives and a television contract is pieced together, prepare for plenty of debate.
