  • Ok, I feel a little better about this addition. Pacific seems to fit the profile we are looking for in an expansion partner. A quick glance on the web reveals the following about Pacific:

    1. Mascot is named "Powercat"
    2. They are in some way affiliated with the Methodist church
    3. The student section has a name (Orange Army)
    4. The gym (Alex Spanos Center) seats 6100 people, features lots of ads for local businesses, and has cool exposed wooden beams supporting the roof.

    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I got the Methodist info from Wiki. Silly me.
It does say they are still associated with the Methodist Church. I don't know that there's any practical distinction between being "associated" and being "affiliated" as you posited.

They will have the largest arena in the WCC when they join.

        • Pacific joining means I have a game 2.5 hours away every year. But then, that game is against Pacific.

We thought my son might swim for Pacific. He got an email saying they were going to call him to discuss swimming for them but the call never came. We found out later that the coach was fired that week. Oh well.

          • UOP's main campus is in Stockton, which has been honored several times of late as the worst place in the nation to live. I believe its most thriving business is a bus tour of foreclosed homes. It also has an Asparagus Festival.

Wow, that's even worse than Gilroy's garlic festival.

Does the festival usually devolve into a bunch of lame phallic references?

The campus is beautiful though. I believe it was used to portray the campus where one Indiana Jones taught, because of its Ivy feel.

Edit: The campus has been used in many films to portray an East coast look. Here's a list:

That being said, this makes a crappy conference crappier.

                • Reading the message boards from the rest of the WCC teams, most everyone else in the conference sees this as a negative. The general feeling is that if BYU were leaving, it would be better for the conference to go back to 8 teams instead of bringing in a bottom feeder like Portland as a so called replacement.

I generally agree. In addition, as long as we're in the WCC with so many BAD teams on our schedule for 2 conference games per year, I'd rather not expand the conference to give us more OOC games against better teams to boost our RPI.

Surprisingly, I have never attended and will have to miss next month's fete as well. Equally surprising, despite the emphasis on healthy vegetables, per Wikipedia, Stockton is tied with Montgomery, Alabama, as the most obese metro area in the United States.

Why, do you want it to?

                      • Is Pacific a true "research" institution? Also, you don't add another team unless it makes financial sense. I'd be interested in seeing projections for a new TV deal now that we have the greater Stockton/Lodi/Manteca TV market nailed down.

Because it makes travel sense, it makes financial sense. I suspect having four Bay Area Teams is more efficient in traveling within conference than having three. I suspect down the road they would look to add another Southern California School to balance out that Metro area as well.

Do we have to worry about Cali, Oregon, Washington, Texas or Utah legislatures stepping in to nix the deal?

Maybe the SC will get tired of health care and look into this.

"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf
