  • So, the basic summary from the Holmoe comments on expansion are:

Big 12: They told us they were interested. We didn't get too far in negotiations before they invited TCU, then WVU. There was never any invite. BYU did not discuss TV and did not make certain demands regarding BYUtv and minimun national broadcasts.

Big East: We were essentially offered an invite. We pretty much proposed what we heard i.e. we keep rights to all home games. Big East balked, but negotiations were civil.

Based on this those who claim BYU had an offer form B12 are full of crap. Likewise for those claiming BYU made unreasonable demands on B12. OTOH, we did make such demands on the Big Ease, yet in many minds, those demands were not unreasonable.

How do you get this from Holmoe's comments?

Yeah, because the Big Least is not nearly as desirable as the Big 12, so the measure of what is reasonable with the Big East is different.

Reasonable negotiations with the Big 12:
        Big 12: Jump.
        BYU: How high?

Reasonable negotiations with the Big Least:
        BE: Jump.
        BYU: LOL

          Because that's what he said:

"We didn't get that far down the road (with the Big-12). We were told that we were a team that they were interested in, but we didn't even have discussions about television."
"TV is a part of any discussion now with conferences, but for people to say that the Big East was a very similar situation to the Big 12--it's not fair, because we didn't have television conversations before the Big 12 went and invited other teams."

Because he said as much. I watched part of the interview on TV last night and he said that while they had talks with the Big 12, they never got to the point of discussing TV contract issues. He then said that many fans have been passing rumors that demands related to BYUtv derailed the Big 12 talks, but that is simply not true.

                Here we go:

Holmoe called it "unfortunate" that "many people, even BYU fans, are feeling that we didn't get the opportunity to get into a conference such as the stature of the Big 12 or the Big East because we came with these large demands, and it all had to be about BYUtv. That's just not true."

                • I'm wondering if Sunday play is a bigger issue than I had previously thought.
                  Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

It is an issue, especially when you have two other equally good or better options that don't have that issue.

I've been trying to tell you Sunday play is the monster issue, the killer. If I were president of Baylor or whatever I might find it slightly inconvenient that no pork can be served at pre-game meals. But that would not be a deal breaker. Here you are asking 11 other schools to agree never to play a tournament game on Sunday. That's the ramifiction of what BYU is asking. Also, the no play on Sunday thing is extreme to most people, especially academics or intellectuals; it's kind of annoying. Most Christians aren't so narrow in their interpretation of the Sabbath. Finally, it's symbolic of the whole CULTure thing and a nice shorthand explanation for opposing BYU.

Maybe you did, maybe you didn't. I can't remember. There's just so much out there.

But there is one thing that is burned into my memory; you pushing a presidential candidate that had us voting for SARAH PALIN.

                            SARAH FREAKING PALIN!

Remember when MW and SU where fawning all over Palin after her convention speech? Several of us tried to tell them that something didn't smell right, but they wouldn't listen.

I haven't seen the interview. I'll check it out. After his initial comments before the Oregon State game, McCann on BYUTV followed up Holmoe's statements with something like "Holmoe said we never got an invite but you have to remember you don't get an invite until both parties agree to everything in principal and blah blah blah of course as we know there have been many talks blah blah blah". Basically he said everything everyone here has been saying. That we pretty much had an offer and f***ed it up over TV rights and other demands.

SU (I hate even having to address this bullshit) thinks BYU is spinning to save face to make it seem like we were somewhere in the picture. I think Holmoe is spinning to get the fan base off his back and not look like we blundered. But I haven't heard the interview. I'll listen now.
