  • USA Hoy chimes in with support for the "Destabilization of the Big East" theory

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/colle...ure/50682158/1

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey said his school - a Big East member in most sports other than football - "is trying like heck" to help rebuild the league. "We've been through one rebuilding of the Big East," he said, alluding to departures in 2004 and 2005. "Hopefully we can get through another, but TCU leaving is a blow, no question."

That is for when BYU and other visiting teams come into town.

The reason TCU got invited over BYU is cow town has Whataburger.

There is some chatter about the Big 12 possibly being willing to accept ND's non-football sports if they need to leave the Big East, with the obvious hope that they join for football a few years down the road. I just don't see it. I think as long as the Big East survives in some form, ND will stay. There are still some good basketball schools there even if all the decent football programs bail.

The only thing Indy is better for is $ and ESPN games. These are important considerations, but they are also fleeting. Playing in the MWC, yea even a diminished MWC, is much better from a fan and player perspective. The only benefit Indy has from a fan perspective is that it makes it easier to join a conference. If that does not happen, then Indy will be a gamble that pays early dividends but will eventually sink the program.

Hindsight being 20/20 BYU should have stayed put and worked on getting a better Tier 1 and Tier 2 TV deal for the conference. The MTN isn't a horrible tier 3 netowrk option. At least then we could continue to play in a conference that is only slighly worse off than it was before. Boise is better than either TCU or Utah from a competitive standpoint and Nevada and Fresno are better than the bottom of the MWC. The conference is weaker today, but if BYU were still there it wouldn't be much weaker. You think if we beg they will take us back?

I disagree completely. I much prefer Independence over the MWC, even with this year's crappy home schedule.
If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

In the meantime, our Winnebago driving brother-in-law, TCU, has been invited to TWO BCS CONFERENCES!!! We can't seem to pull the effin' trigger because we have a bunch of Kool-Aid drinkers driving the boat and Eddie takes his broken down Athletic Department into the seat we have wanted for more than 15 years. While all this is happening, our fan base (Kool-Aid drinkers that they are) has in large degree convinced itself that we don't need to go to a real conference because Independence is just as good so they aren't putting pressure on the Admin. and ADs. Independence was a stupid idea and, if continued, will result in the death of BYU sports.

              • I have seen every game this season live or on my big screen. I absolutely positively prefer independence to the MWC.

For those that are pissed about independence, did you get the games last year? This just has made such a huge difference for me.

disagreement is ok but I am having a difficult time in seeing how it is better when you look at anything other than a balance sheet and a game on ESPNU

the problem isn't the MTN. the problem is the Tier 1 and Tier 2 options of Versus and CBSCS. Now instead of an exposure problem we have a program on the cusp of irrelevance. ESPN isn't going to renew this deal and our games will make their way onto ESPNU when we are lucky and mostly BYUtv which is cool and all but nobody watches it.

Yearn? Like 95% of the other commenters here, I also read cougarboard.

I like this site for two reasons: good, funny comments; and the spectacle of guys on an internet site preening themselves for not being another internet site from which they differ minutely. Its like ALUFs crowing that they're not BYU fans, only more so.

CUF is cougarboard with a blue collared shirt and stubble.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

When did the mtn get on dish?

yeah I don't have dish...sorry I used to have Directv and have comcast. Guess I was wrong about the Dish. In any case it isn't like you don't have options to get the mtn. Everyone complains about the mtn. the problem is that the conference does not have a good T1 option so more games fall to the mtn. Get a better t1 option and much of the griping about the mtn goes away.

Something I have been curious about...how are the ratings for these games so far this season? I havent been able to find them on zapit or anywhere else, but admittedly havent looked terribly hard.

Are people tuning in? If the ratings are there, they will renew the deal.
